Report urges Kenya to ban plastic bags

Wednesday, March 9, 2005File:Plastic bag stock sized.jpg

They are cheap, useful, and very plentiful, and that is exactly the problem, according to researchers. A report issued on Feb. 23 by a cadre of environment and economics researchers suggested that Kenya should ban the common plastic bag that one gets at the checkout counter of grocery stores, and place a levy on other plastic bags, all to combat the country’s environmental problems stemming from the bags’ popularity.

Triple limb-reattachment fails – boy loses foot

Tuesday, April 5, 2005Terry Vo, the 10-year old Australian boy who had two hands and a foot reattached by surgeons after losing them in an accident, has had to have the foot re-amputated. He will be given a prosthetic foot in its place.

The operation to re-attach three limbs was thought to have been a first – but was ultimately unsuccessful, with the foot having died inside, and receiving insufficient blood supply following the surgery to reattach it.

“That would lead to the small muscles in the foot actually constricting, the toes bending over and a deformed …. foot that is sort of clawed over and doesn’t have good sensation,” said plastic surgeon, Mr Robert Love today, on Australia’s ABC Radio.

“Even if you can get all of that to survive, he [would be] worse off than having had an amputation.”

“What is very disappointing is that for the first two days after [the operation] the foot looked absolutely magnificent,” he said.

Terry’s hands were healing well, said the surgeon. The prosthetic foot would allow him to walk normally, since his knee was intact.

What’s The Trucking Industry Outlook For 2011?

What’s The Trucking Industry Outlook For 2011?

by

Jerry L. Work

The trucking industry is in constant fluctuation and relies on a large number of outside factors to determine in what direction the industry will head. The trucking industry outlook for the coming year has some interesting things going on, and it is important for fleet and company owners to know what to expect for 2011. Here, we’ll go over a few things to consider for the coming business year, as well as a few key factors that should play a major role in determining the landscape of the trucking industry in the year 2011.

The trucking industry can be read as a small slice of the overall economy, because the transportation of goods is directly tied to the amount of goods consumers are purchasing, which in turn is tied directly to the creation of jobs around the country. As the employment market is constantly fluctuating, and currently in a slow, uncertain state of recovery, the outlook for the trucking industry in the coming year is uncertain. The creation of new jobs is inherently a slow process, and because it is a crucial aspect in determining the amount and nature of goods being transported, it is a tricky year to predict. Company owners and managers are advised to play it safe in the coming years, and an overall sense of careful growth seems to be the general consensus. Another factor playing into the outlook for the trucking industry next year is the nature of goods consumers and businesses are buying. Industrial goods such as equipment and raw materials have seen an increase in shipping recently due to business growth, while luxury goods have seen a significant drop due to people tightening their wallets. However, as the economy begins to recover, an increasing number of consumers will feel secure about purchasing more and more expensive goods. There is a number of challenges facing any trucking company owner. Growth is important, and yet company owners would be wise to carefully monitor the way in which they want to grow their business. However, refusing to grow can lead to stagnation, and there is currently an abundance of experienced and qualified people looking for work in the industry. Keeping a watchful eye on the types of goods being traded and the areas of the countries experiencing faster or slower economic growth will give trucking companies an edge on the competition in 2011.

Jermaine Pennant jailed for drink-driving

Tuesday, March 1, 2005

Aylesbury, England — The Arsenal F.C. midfielder Jermaine Pennant, currently on loan to Birmingham City, has today pleaded guilty to drink-driving, driving while disqualified, and driving without insurance by Aylesbury magistrates court. Pennant received a sentence of three months imprisonment. Pennant’s lawyer, Bary Warbutton, has said that the footballer will appeal against the severity of the sentence.

The incident occurred on January 23 of this year, Pennant was arrested after crashing teammate Ashley Cole’s car into a lamppost. The 22-year-old claimed that he crashed the car after attempting to operate the car’s Satellite navigation system.

Despite the claim by Warbutton that imprisonment “could completely destroy his career”, Birmingham City have said that they will stand by the player, and help to rehabilitate him. Arsenal released a statement saying that the sentence would not impact the player’s future with the club; his contract with club expires in the summer, at the same time as his loan-spell with Birmingham ends.

U.S. Senate majority goes to Democrats

Friday, November 10, 2006

George Allen, incumbent Republican Senator from Virginia, conceded the state’s mid-term election to Democratic challenger Jim Webb on Thursday. Democrats have now gained the six seats needed by the party to hold majority control of the Senate.

“The people of Virginia have spoken, they have spoken in a closely divided voice. We have two 49ers,” Allen said during the afternoon press conference in Arlington. Allen garnered 49.25% of the vote, compared to the 49.55% who supported Webb. “I do not wish to cause more rancor by protracted litigation that would not, in my opinion, alter the results.”

The concession by Allen in traditionally Republican Virginia follows what were once prospects for an Allen 2008 presidential bid. An easy Allen re-election campaign to the Senate was expected, but what came was the Democrats ability to frame the election as a national referendum on the war in Iraq. Democrats may have succeeded nationally to draw on the issue of Iraq, but local politics were very much in play in Northern Virginia.

According to the Virginia Pilot, “Unofficial returns gave Democratic nominee Webb a 120,000-vote advantage over Allen in Northern Virginia’s eight localities. But Webb trailed badly across most of the rest of the state and would have decisively lost the election without his Northern Virginia support.” The margin by which Webb won was 9,000 votes.

Allen’s formulaic stance against tax increases, whether for highway taxes to improve congested northern highway and commuter corridors, or outright fiscal conservativism of all taxes in the face of a burgeoning national deficit, worked against him.

The state constitutional amendment banning recognition of same-sex marriage supported by Allen, but opposed by Webb and Governor Tim Kaine, and most Northern Virginians, worked against Allen in the election.

Mexican Cooking: A Melting Pot Of Diverse Cultures

By Michelle Ann Gelder

Mexican food – authentic ones, and not those watered-down fast-food tacos and breakfast burritos either – have enjoyed a surge in popularity in recent years. Mexico has a rich history influenced by different cultures and this has brought about a unique taste that cannot be mistaken for anything else.

What opened people’s eyes to the wonderful Mexican traditions revolving around food was the best-selling novel, Like Water for Chocolate. Native food has such an enduring effect that even today, many farmers refer to themselves as ‘el hombre del maiz.’ The honor of being called men of corn was great because their ancient ancestors, the Mayans, Aztecs, and Toltecs valued corn because of all its uses. Other crops too held great significance in Mexican culture: peanuts, beans, avocados, tomatoes, squash, and coconuts were all traded hundreds of years ago. But none can equal the high regard that native Mexicans place on chocolate – ‘ the food of the Gods.’

When the Spanish, led by Cortez, occupied Mexico in 1521, the two cultures exchanged foods. The Spanish got a taste of the Aztec’s food and, in turn, they brought in livestock like cows, pigs, and sheep, along with milk and cheese, garlic and other spices, and vegetables like lettuce. Spices were also brought in by the Spanish so cinnamon, oregano, black pepper, and coriander are now staples of Mexican cooking. These ingredients have been so ingrained in Mexican cooking that dishes like cheese quesadillas or grilled beef fajitas are no longer seen as having any foreign influences.

Native Americans aside from the Aztecs have also left a mark on Mexican cooking. Native Americans who used to trade with the Aztecs were the ones who introduced corn tortillas to them. It’s just that tortillas have been such a fixture of Mexican cooking that it never occurs to anyone that they are not indigenous to Mexico.

The French also had a role to play. For a brief period, Mexico had been under French rule, so there is a little hint of Gallic flavor to Mexican food. Chilies en nogado comes to mind, a dish made of stuffed chilies topped with walnut sauce.

Finally, the Texans have left a little bit of America on Mexican food. South Texas has been a combination of Mexican and Anglo culture primarily due to the state’s proximity to Mexico. The Mexican ‘barbacoa’ – a method of cooking where meat is roasted slowly over a spit – is seen as the origin of the word ‘barbecue’. Tex-Mex cuisine is known as an amalgamation of the two cooking styles and is characterized by the heavy use of beef, pinto beans, and rich, spicy red sauces.

Today, there are countless regional variations of dishes within Mexico. Sonoran Mexican food is markedly influenced by the Pacific coast and California’s abundance of vegetables. On the other hand, food along the Gulf of Mexico centers on luscious seafood. Too bad that the ecosystem of the Gulf of Mexico is now under a lot of stress because of BP Petroleum’s recent debacle. Should the damage be permanent, the world will lose some of the most wonderful seafood anywhere.

There is one food that is unmistakably Mexican. Chili peppers have as many varieties as spellings – ‘chili,’ ‘chile’ or ‘chilies’ – they are some of the most potent flavorings around. Whether, they are used in sauces or stuffed like poblano peppers, or used to give dishes a kick like jalapenos and habaneros, chilies are one food that is definitely Mexican.

Israel undergoes major emergency drill

Thursday, April 10, 2008

Israel has tested its readiness for a state of war and emergency by testing its emergency services and shelters on a national scale.

The drill is to be analyzed in order to determine the elements which need to be corrected and fixed, and Israel’s emergency readiness is to be assessed.

Israeli school children were told to hide under their school tables as part of the drill, which officials claimed to be the biggest drill ever in Israeli history.

Syria has claimed, in return, that the drill is intended as a battle readiness exercise and claims that Israel is preparing for war.
