U.S. federal marshals seize killer beds

Wednesday, March 23, 2005

On behalf of the FDA, U.S. Federal marshals have begun seizing beds which have killed at least seven patients out of about 30 who had become trapped by the products. Three versions of the bed were found to be “dangerous to health” by the FDA, with the specific danger of, “placing patients at an increased risk of entrapment and asphyxiation.”

The model numbers of the faulty beds include the Vail 500, 1000, and 2000 Enclosed Bed Systems. The beds are made by Toledo, Ohio-based Vail Products, Inc.

In a government press release, the FDA pointed out that Vail had failed to heed two previous warnings issued by the agency, asking the company to comply with regulations regarding proper labeling and usage directions. The FDA also said that Vail had failed to supply required documentation to the agency to comply with the Medical Device Reporting and Reports of Corrections and Removals regulations.

At the time this story was filed, the Vail web site made no mention of today’s FDA announcement. Toledo’s WTOL News 11 reported that, “Company officials say their beds aren’t dangerous if used properly.” The Vail corporate web site claims that the beds allow, “the patient to move about freely within a safe, padded environment” and “control wandering.”

The FDA is the U.S. agency responsible for regulating food, drugs, medical devices, and cosmetics.

The case has been referred to a coroner.

A couple living in New York City have decided to take a taxi all the way to Arizona. Betty and Bob Matas are retiring and leaving the city for good. What started as joke, has become reality, in part to spare their cats from traveling in a jetliner cargo-hold. They have negotiated a US$3,000 flat fee instead of the metered rate, which was estimated at US$5,000.

A vocational nurse working for Dr. John Capriotti, a plastic surgeon, was accused of setting the fire that wounded several and killed three people in Houston, Texas on March 28. She was allegedly trying to cover up the fact that she hadn’t completed the paperwork for an upcoming audit.

The fire began in Dr. Capriotti’s office on the fifth floor and quickly spread to the sixth. Arson investigators from the Houston Fire Department, the FBI and the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives had been working to determine the source of the fire.

Iran announced that it has started industrial scale production of nuclear fuel involving hundreds of centrifuges. The announcement comes as President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad reasserts his nation’s nuclear rights in the face of two rounds of sanctions by the UN Security Council, which is seeking a halt to such work.

The United States denounced the declaration, saying it showed Iran was defying the international community.

Original Story
 • “Hotel development proposal could displace Buffalo, NY business owners” — Wikinews, February 17, 2006

In February of 2006, the Savarino Services Construction Corp. proposed the construction of a seven million dollar hotel on Elmwood and Forest Avenues in Buffalo, New York. In order for the hotel to be built, at least five properties containing businesses and residents would have to be destroyed. It was not certain whether the properties were owned by Savarino or by the landlord Hans Mobius. The hotel was designed by Karl Frizlen of the Frizlen Group, and is planned to be a franchise of the Wyndham Hotels group.

Elmwood Avenue is known by the community as a popular shopping center, and Nancy Pollina of Don Apparel (who is “utterly against” the construction) claims it’s the only reason why students from Buffalo State College leave campus. Additionally, Michael Faust of Mondo Video said he did not want to “get kicked out of here [his video store property].”

In 1995, a Walgreens was proposed to be built on the same land, but Walgreens later withdrew its request for a variance because of pressure from the community. More recently, Pano Georgiadis tried to get the rights to demolish the Atwater House next to his restaurant on Elmwood Avenue, but was denied a permit due to the property’s historical value. He has since been an opponent to the hotel construction.

In the process of debating the hotel, it was thought that a hotel had previously existed on the proposed site, however; research done at the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society had shown that no hotel had previously existed on the site.

China-EU financial relations are growing

Friday, December 4, 2009

Chinese President Hu Jintao met with the European Union’s leaders Jose Manuel Barroso and Fredrik Reinfeldt in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, China. The EU leaders were in China to attend Monday’s twelfth China-European Union (EU) summit. Barroso said China-EU relations are “more mature, deeper” then before.

China-EU trading relations have grown over the last 35 years. The volume of trade between the pair reached US$425.58 billion in 2008, an increase of 19.5% over the prior year. Bilateral relations are far closer now than in previous years.

Swedish Prime Minister, Fredrik Reinfeldt, said the Lisbon Treaty would help strengthen EU-China relations. Summit attendees also talked about nuclear non-proliferation, disarmament, human rights, climate change, combating financial crisis and financial investments.

Before the twelfth China-EU summit, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met with EU delegates in Nanjing, and the trading partners celebrated the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations.

Jetstar to offer iPads as an in-flight entertainment option

Wednesday, June 2, 2010

Jetstar Airways, a Qantas owned Australian low-cost airline, has announced plans to trial Apple iPads as an in-flight entertainment option. This trial would make Jetstar one of the first airlines in the world to offer the iPad.

Starting later this month, Jetstar plans to begin a two-week trial, during which passengers will have the option to rent iPads for $10AU on domestic flights longer than an hour. Thirty iPads would be available on each test plane. These devices would be preloaded with games, e-books, music and video content. Internet access however will be disabled as per Jetstar’s policy on internet connected devices, said spokeswoman Andrea Wait.

The iPads offered by Jetstar, will be specially customized by Bluebox Avionics. Bluebox Avionics, at present, is the only company to offer iPads as part of an in-flight entertainment system. Jetstar will be the first to offer the Bluebox Avionics iPad based systems, though, Bluebox Avionics has said the system will be available to other airlines soon.

Shortly following the initial release of the iPad, Jetstar chief information officer Stephen Tame speculated that the iPad “may lead in the future the end of airline in-flight entertainment systems”. Depending on the results of the trial, iPads may replace existing Jetstar in-flight entertainment systems.

Jetstar chief executive Bruce Buchanan said he expected the iPads to be very popular during the trial. If the trial is successful, the airline would “be looking to roll out the devices across our entire domestic and international network later in the year”, said Buchanan.

Found Money Management… Financial Planning For Middle Income Families Made Easy And Profitable!

By Lew Nason

“What’s so different about the Found Money Management concepts, verses the Circle of Wealth, Missed fortune, Infinite Banking and LEAP concepts?”

Found Money Management is much more than a selling system. It’s a complete financial philosophy for helping Middle Income Families to “Live Debt and Truly Wealthy,” without them spending any additional money, or changing their current life style! It’s about helping people to understand and face the serious financial challenges we are all encountering right now, and then helping them to reposition their money and spending to achieve financial security and independence for the future. As the late Loren Dunton, the creator and founder of Financial Planning, said: “It’s about helping average people to learn how to spend, save, invest, insure and plan wisely for the future, to achieve financial independence.”

Found Money Management incorporates many of the best financial concepts presented in the Circle of Wealth, Missed Fortune, Infinite Banking and LEAP systems… And, these concepts are NOT New! They are the proven, ‘timeless’ financial concepts that most of the wealthiest people in the world have used for centuries to accumulate their wealth. And, they are the same concepts that have been used by many of the top producers in the financial services industry for decades. We’ve been using and training agents on how to adapt and use these sound financial concepts for the past 26 years.

Below are just some of the major differences between Missed Fortune, Infinite Banking, LEAP, Circle of Wealth… and Found Money Management.

The First Major Difference is that the Missed Fortune, Infinite Banking and LEAP systems are designed primarily to be used with the more affluent prospects. For example: The underlying premise behind each of these sales concepts is that you get your prospects to put as much of their money as they possibly can, as quickly as they can, into a cash value life insurance policy! In many cases, they just expect prospects to magically come up with the money from their current income. And/Or, they must come up with the money for the increased mortgage payments.

Would you agree that very few people, except the wealthy, have any extra money?

Using the Found Money Management concepts you’ll discover how to help your middle income prospects to ‘Find The Money’, so they can take advantage of these concepts without spending any additional money, or changing their current life style!

The Second Major Difference is that working with more affluent prospects (the wealthy) puts you in direct competition with all the other advisors out there. Doesn’t that make it much more difficult to set appointments and to close sales? Using the Found Money Management strategies, you’ll learn how to tap into the virtually untapped Middle Income Family market and avoid all that competition! And, you’ll close more sales!!!

The Third Major Difference is the Circle of Wealth, Missed Fortune, Infinite Banking and LEAP systems are primarily just sales systems. They don’t have a solid marketing, prospecting and appointment setting program that is transferable and puts you in front of your ‘Ideal Prospects’ on a daily basis. Would you agree that it doesn’t matter how good a sales system is, if you don’t have a continuous stream of people to see? Using the Found Money Management philosophies you’ll soon be attracting a steady stream of the ‘Right’ highly qualified prospects. You’ll have More Leads, More Appointments and More Sales!

Other Major Differences include:

Found Money Management is ‘NOT’ about ‘Harvesting Home Equity’ (refinancing) to put large amounts of money into cash value life insurance. In fact, many of the cases do not involve refinancing at all!

When refinancing is appropriate for the clients situation, we ‘DO NOT’ recommend using an Option ARM to remove home equity! In fact, in my 26 years using these concepts I have never recommended, or used an Option ARM with my clients!

You’ll learn the ‘Proper’ ways to use home equity!

All of their systems are very complicated. Found Money Management is a much simpler, common sense approach to helping people

You don’t have the exorbitant cost of their systems and their training! Their systems are $4,000 and more upfront, with annual re-licensing fees!

You are generally forced to sign up with one of their primary companies and take lower commissions to get the ongoing training and support you need with their systems!

Finally, we charge considerably less for our system, with ongoing training! And, we are not recruiters!

The Found Money Management Marketing Difference

The Basic Premise

We believe that Middle Income Families are a virtually untapped market. And, you won’t have the competition with all the other advisors. Many Middle Income Families are struggling financially and are looking for real help, which makes them much easier to see.

Consider, until now, most Middle Income Families have been at a distinct disadvantage when it comes to managing money and accumulating wealth. Most of the financial information being passed on by the major publications and many of the self-proclaimed financial experts is really geared towards people who are already wealthy. These are the people who can afford to take risks with their money.

These wealthy people live in a different world. They are not concerned about qualifying for college financial aid, so their children can afford to go to college. They are not concerned about eliminating debt to improve their cash flow, so they can afford health insurance, or put braces on Samantha’s teeth. They don’t have to worry about whether there will be food on the table or a roof over their family’s head, if something happens to them.

Our objective is to show you how to truly help Middle Income Families by using the little known, unconventional strategies that the wealthy have used for decades to accumulate and hold on to their money. The reason most Middle Income families continue to struggle today is because the conventional financial wisdom that has been passed on from generation to generation doesn’t work to accumulate wealth. This conventional wisdom is what our grandparents learned they had to do to survive during the tough economic times, such as the great depression.

The Basic Concepts

We’ve developed a unique educational financial presentation, to help people see and understand the financial problems they are facing today. Then we help them see there are simple solutions, based on many of the concepts found in the Missed Fortune, Circle of Wealth, Infinite Banking and LEAP. We’ve tailored these concepts to help you to correctly and ethically help Middle Income families to:

Reduce Or Eliminate Consumer Debt! – Families need real help to ‘Find the Money’ to break the chains of debt.

Maximize The Amount They Can Invest From Current Income! – Families need your help to Find The Money to put into savings.

Guarantee The Safety Of Their Investment Principal – With the recent losses in the stock market, most Middle American families recognize they can’t afford to lose any more of their hard earned money.

Minimize Income Taxes – Is there any question that income taxes can significantly reduce the amount of money available for savings!

Position Their Money To Provide Current Liquidity – Families need to have access to their money, without penalties, prior to age 65, for college, emergencies and other family expenses.

Maximize Investment Income – It’s not how much money you’ve accumulated. It’s how much income you have to spend. Tax Free provides more spendable retirement income than Tax Deferred!

We’ll show you how to make a real difference in peoples lives!

The Found Money Management System!

Using the Found Money Management marketing and sales system, you’ll learn how to:

Fire engulfs 140 buildings in Itoigawa, Japan

Saturday, December 24, 2016

A fire on Thursday engulfed at least 140 buildings in Itoigawa, Japan. The inferno injured, by varying reports, at least eight people.

The coastal town in the northern prefecture of Niigata’s many traditional wooden buildings burned easily, fanned by winds of 56kph (35mph). Narrow streets hampered firefighters. “Sparks of fire flew around,” one local resident recounted to Japanese public broadcaster NHK. “That’s why far away buildings unexpectedly caught fire and it became large-scale. I’ve never seen something like this before.”

The national Fire and Disaster Management Agency said the fire started at a Chinese restaurant. The restaurant’s owner yesterday told police he left a stove on and stepped outside. Police said the man told them “I feel deeply sorry for what I’ve done,” and said he went home, returning to find a pot aflame.

Hundreds of residents were evacuated, with 40,000 square metres (about ten acres) of city burning. The fire broke out at around 10:30am local time in a shopping area near the city’s primary train station. It was brought under control by around 8:30pm. Firefighters were assisted by Self-Defence Forces troops brought in at the request of Niigata Governor Ryuichi Yoneyama.

“We will do our utmost effort in supporting those affected”, Yoneyama said yesterday as he inspected the disaster scene. Firefighters remained wary yesterday that ongoing high winds could reignite the charred ruins. Local authorities have begun consulting residents on assistance.

Emperor Akihito paused during his 83rd birthday celebrations to offer condolences. “Many people had to be evacuated in the cold weather. I hope their health will not suffer,” he said from his Tokyo palace.

We will do our utmost effort in supporting those affected

Two women in their 40s suffered minor injuries, one via smoke inhalation and one by falling and hitting her head. At least five firefighters also sustained minor injuries. The fire was Japan’s worst non-natural blaze for twenty years. Smoke rose about 300m (roughly a thousand feet) as rescuers worked to contain it. Seventeen fire trucks responded.

Itoigawa is home to around 44,500 people. It faces the Sea of Japan. The mixed neighbourhood features both homes and shops. One local official said it is suspected the timing of the fire led to many residents being out of harm’s way.

Building collapse in Barbados traps family

Sunday, August 26, 2007Miami Dade Fire Rescue, Urban Search and Rescue Florida Task Force 1 Members were on the scene since last night. Search dogs worked the scene all night.

According to current reports, sometime early this morning, an apartment building in Brittons Hill, Barbados fell into a cave below.

Five family members are known to be trapped in the collapse, although reports have not be made as to whether these are the only individuals involved. Rescue workers, as well as several prominent politicians are currently on the scene; two cranes have been deployed to remove debris. Evacuation has occurred, with an extension of this area being discussed.

Miami Dade Police arrived on the scene late Sunday night and are now in a joint effort with the Barbados Defence Force, Barbados Fire Service and Royal Barbados Police Force to rescue possible survivors. Prime Minister Owen Arthur also stated that surveys are currently being conducted to determine the stability of the surrounding area, and only after these reports have been compiled will residents know whether they will be able to return to their homes.

A cadaver dog was sent into the cavern and has identified two areas where there are possible dead bodies. Sadly it is no longer a rescue mission but recovery one.

STS-122 astronauts perform third spacewalk

Friday, February 15, 2008

Two astronauts have performed the third and final spacewalk, or Extra-vehicular activity (EVA), of the STS- 122 mission. Rex Walheim and Stan Love began the spacewalk at 13:07 GMT, departing the Quest airlock of the International Space Station (ISS). The EVA ended with their return to the airlock, seven hours and 25 minutes later, at 20:32 GMT.

The goals of the spacewalk were to install two experiments onto the outside of the newly delivered Columbus module of the space station, and to load a failed gyroscope onto the visiting Space Shuttle, Atlantis, for return to Earth next Wednesday. The gyroscope, CMG-3 was one of four used to control the space station’s attitude. It was replaced during an EVA made by the STS-118 crew during August 2007. It has been stored outside the Space Station since then, awaiting collection.

The experiments installed on the Columbus module are a solar observatory, SOLAR, and a materials research experiment, EuTEF. Subsequent to this, the astronauts fitted handrails to the Columbus module, to assist with future EVAs. Following the successful completion of these primary tasks, the astronauts performed several other tasks, which included collecting safety tethers from previous EVAs, and inspecting micrometeroite damage on a handrail.

This is the 104th spacewalk conducted as part of the International Space Station programme.
