Pitt and Jolie’s guard pulls gun on photographer in Pune, India

Friday, October 13, 2006

A private security guard attached to Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie pulled out his revolver to threaten a lensman in Pune, India. The Associated Press photographer was also roughed up by the guard, Sunil Singh, who works for Tops Securities. Defamer.com, a tabloid in Los Angeles, however, says that two guards were involved in the attack. The incident occurred at the Sindh Society area in the suburb of Aundh.

A spokesperson for Tops confirmed the incident, although he claimed the weapon had been pulled out in “self-defence”. The accosted person himself chose to remain anonymous and refused to comment on the issue. Freelance photographer Rishikesh Puranik, who witnessed the scene, said that the AP lensman had approached Angelina Jolie with a request for a photo-shoot while she was on the sets. Jolie and her partner Brad Pitt are in India to shoot for A Mighty Heart, a film based on Daniel Pearl, a journalist who was killed in 2002 while in Karachi, Pakistan.

Bird Flu found in Africa

Wednesday, February 8, 2006

The H5N1 Avian Flu virus, also known as Bird Flu, has been found in Nigeria by Italian scientists. Tests done on samples in a laboratory confirm that the strain is the one that can kill people, although no human cases have been reported said the Paris-based United Nations body. This is the first time is has appeared on the continent.

Reports say tests of the virus closely resemble the virus in Asia. The virus has been discovered in poultry flocks in a large Nigerian farm. “It is the first report of the disease in Africa,” the Paris-based World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) said on Wednesday.

“It’s going to be very difficult to mount an eradication campaign,” said Dr. Alex Thiermann, president of the OIE’s international animal health code, from Paris, France. “With what we have today, it is a highly pathogenic H5N1 – the same, or very closely related to the previous ones,” said Thiermann. He also added, “a full genetic analysis of sample viruses is expected to be completed by late Thursday.”

Maria Zampaglione of the Paris-based OIE said “An outbreak has been detected. A local poultry farm keeping 46,000 birds was affected, of which 42,000 were infected and 40,000 of those, died.” The farm is located in Jaji, which is a village in the northern state of Kaduna.

“The farm is located near the Niger Delta, one of the largest over-wintering areas for wild birds in Africa.” said Thiermann.

Quarantine measures on the control and movement of poultry have been taken, and the farm has been disinfected said Nigerian authorities.

“However, it is too early to say how serious the outbreak is and how big its spread could be,” said Ilaria Capua of the Italian bird flu centre in Padua. “We have to be cautious in evaluating the possible implications of these findings.”

In Rome, Samuel Jutzi, a director of the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization said, “if the situation in Nigeria gets out of control, it will have a devastating impact on the poultry population in the region. It will seriously damage the livelihoods of millions of people and it will increase the exposure of humans to the virus.”

“When you have 46,000 chickens in a house, usually you have some degree of biocontainment…So these (chickens) are not likely to be the ones to first encounter migratory waterfowl,” Thiermann said.

Wildlife circles have been debating on whether or not wild birds are spreading the virus around the globe. Experts believe they are playing a role but most believe poultry movement, poultry products and poultry manure is the main cause of the spreading of the virus.

“But probably not in this case,” said Thiermann. “While it’s too early to blame the wildlife, it’s very likely to be in an area that’s remote enough that it’s not likely to be associated with international trade.”

OIE spokeswoman Zampiglione also said, “Experts had been fearing an African outbreak for months. The conditions there are more likely to lead to contagion from birds to man.”

British singer George Michael, 53, dies

Wednesday, December 28, 2016

George Michael, a well-known British pop singer and songwriter, died on Christmas Day at the age of 53. Michael was found dead at his home in Oxfordshire, England, by boyfriend Fadi Fawaz.

I am in deep shock. I have lost a beloved friend — the kindest, most generous soul and a brilliant artist.

Michael’s publicist released the following statement to People and Entertainment Weekly: “It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period. The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time.” He also reported that Michael had died of heart failure and “passed away peacefully”.

Sir Elton John said via Instagram, “I am in deep shock. I have lost a beloved friend — the kindest, most generous soul and a brilliant artist. My heart goes out to his family and all of his fans.”

George Michael was born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou in London. Over his multi-decade career, he sold more than 100 million records. Along with co-singer Andrew Ridgeley he became famous as part of the duo band Wham!. Together, Michael and Ridgeley produced several hit songs, such as Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go, Freedom, and Last Christmas. In 1985, Wham! was the first Western band to play in China since the beginning of the country’s opening up strategy. Wham! dissolved in 1986. In 1984, Michael recorded the successful single Careless Whisper. Michael was credited as the solo artist in the United Kingdom and as “Wham! featuring George Michael” in the United States. Michael released a hit solo album Faith in 1987, containing hits like I Want Your Sex.

Michael’s life was troubled by both substance abuse and issues with his sexuality. He initially hid his identity as a gay man from his fans, coming out only after a very public arrest for public lewdness in 1998. He would later be arrested for possession of drugs and driving under the influence of drugs. He was sentenced to eight weeks in prison in 2010 for crashing a Range Rover into a storefront while under the influence of drugs and possession of cannabis.

Michael had a history of transforming his negative experiences into art. He wrote White Light about a serious case of pneumonia that led to his hospitalization in 2011, and the music video for Outside, which followed on the heels of his arrest and coming out, showed scenes of a men’s bathroom, a dance club, and men kissing while in police uniforms. He would perform White Light live at the 2012 London Olympics.

Cosmetic Surgery In San Diego: How To Choose The Right Surgeon

Cosmetic Surgery in San Diego: How to Choose the Right Surgeon

by

Alex T Taylor

Millions of people have a thing or two they wish they could change about their appearance. While some downplay this and simply carry on with their lives, others wish they could find a solution every time they stand before a mirror. If you are not happy with your natural looks, and are thinking about doing something about it, then plastic surgery in La Jolla should be your solution. However, the success of your facelift is highly dependent on your choice of doctor, according to Dr. John T. Alexander, a plastic surgeon in La Jolla, California.

Here are three guidelines that should help you when choosing the right plastic surgeon who will meet your needs.

1. Do thorough research

Plastic surgery procedures can transform people s lives. As such, you need to ensure that you take your choice of surgeon seriously. The best starting point may be to ask friends or relatives who have had plastic surgery about their experience and their surgery. Another option would be to ask your personal physician for recommendations. It is also worthwhile to search the web for qualified plastic surgeons in your area.

Ask the people you talk with if they would be confident enough to refer their family members to the same surgeon they had, says

La Jolla Plastic Surgeon

Dr. Alexander. And a detailed search online can be helpful as well, but make sure you look passed the ads and the marketing hype to find a surgeon with advanced qualifications and a wealth of experience. Browse online forums for posts made by real people with real experience.

2. Ask for certifications and other credentials

The most important thing that you need to do is establish whether the plastic surgeon you are interested in has proper training and credentials. Go for nothing short of a surgeon who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. These qualifications indicate that the surgeon has approved standards of practice. Take your time to ascertain every certification held by the surgeon.

3. Verify their experience

If you are satisfied with the surgeon s certifications, then turn your attention to their level of experience. Find out how many times this

San Diego plastic surgeon

has successfully performed the procedure you are considering. You need to investigate any negative feedback and disciplinary actions against the surgeon before allowing them to operate on you. Browsing their before and after photos is also an important step to determine if you like the results they have delivered for other patients.

As mentioned before, plastic surgery is a life transforming procedure. Therefore, when searching for the right doctor to perform plastic surgery in La Jolla, be sure to do adequate research, be patient and always follow your instincts. Bathurst, Australia’s new hospital to be almost doubled in size

Thursday, February 2, 2006

Bathurst Regional Council, the local government responsible for the city of Bathurst and its surrounds in Central Western New South Wales, Australia yesterday revealed it had received a development application for the new Bathurst Base Hospital.

The new hospital is to be built behind the current hospital on the same site and is expected to cost the New South Wales government AUD96 million. The Bathurst Hospital will be the first in the Bathurst-Orange-Bloomfield redevelopment project.

The new hospital will have 149 beds, up from 85 for the current hospital. The hospital will also feature a mental health unit – previously psychiatric patients had to travel to Orange to the Bloomfield Hospital for treatment.

The Bathurst Hospital is expected to have state-of-the art facilities and will share some services with the to be constructed Orange Base Hospital.

The Bathurst Regional Council has approved the demolition of 12 buildings on the hospital site for enabling works. The hospital site is heritage listed although council decided that as the buildings do not contribute to the streetscape they may be demolished.

The demolitions are expected to take place late next month and will take around six weeks to complete. A temporary driveway will then be built to replace the current service entry for food and linen as it will become part of the work site.

Upon completion of the new hospital, the current ward block will be demolished leaving the original building from the late 19th century intact. The original building is expected to become an education centre and consulting rooms.

The original building was opened in 1834. Since then the facility has undergone numerous upgrades and add-ons, with the present ward block being opened in stages from 1978 to 1982.

Other buildings expected to be retained include the Daffodil Cottage (a cancer care centre) and the original Nurse’s quarters known as Poole House.

“Woofstock” dog festival in Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Tuesday, June 12, 2007

North America’s largest outdoor dog festival came back to Toronto last weekend for its fifth year. It ran from the 9th of June to the 10th of June at Toronto’s historical St. Lawrence Market. A Wikinews reporter was there on Sunday to report on some of the events that happened on the last day.

The “Woofstock” dog festival attracted as many as 140,000 people with their dogs. The festival had tons of accessories, sold under tents, to buy for dogs; food, toys, designer clothes, and more. About 400 vendors and exhibitors were there to promote their products, which also gave private dog companies or groups a chance to show their new products. The local SPCA and some animal rescues were under tents answering questions from visitors. While walking, all visitors could see the CN Tower and other very tall buildings.

One of the local TV stations, Citytv, was there. They hosted a live event at the show which was broadcast on TV. People came up on the stage and asked questions regarding their dogs and the host and co-host answered them.

A man, who called himself the “Chalk Master”, drew two pictures on pavement with chalk. He did it for free but donations were welcome. One was a picture of a girl’s head beside a dog’s head, and another with a wolf.

“Hello Humans. I’ve been invited here to provide your eyeball(s), with some pretty colours. I don’t get paid as I work this weekend strictly for tips… so, if you like what you see please make a DONATION. If you don’t like it simply reach into the pocket of the person next to you and give me their money. CHALK MASTER.”

A contest called “Canada’s top dog” had its own tent with a professional photographer taking pictures of dogs behind a white screen; the winning photo is to be published on the cover of “Puppy and dog basics” magazine.

Large “Gourmet” dog bones were also served from a cart and table.

Next year’s festival is expected to be bigger and better with even more attractions.

How Will The Real Estate Market Function In 20 Years?

Are you a buyer considering being a homeowner 20 years from now? Obviously, you are curious as to what is going to happen to the real estate market. According to the new Oxford study on Artificial intelligence, there is a 97-99 percent risk that AI will make the work of real estate agents obsolete. It’s no secret that in the next decade, real estate will be an industry dominated by technology. We can either moan about the tremendous transformation, or we can adapt to new technology. No one complained about why smartphones took over landline telephones because it has made communication much easier around the globe. We have seen how uber has revolutionized the personal transportation industry, how Airbnb has impacted the hospitality industry, what Delivery Hero did to the food industry. Similarly, Real Estate is no longer plodding on its 20th-century working model. Technology and innovation have started to disrupt this industry and in 20 years you will be able to see the change. Here are a few things you need to be ready for.

Trends continued to move to e-commerce. A few years back who thought we could buy groceries online and get them delivered to our homes. In the next 20 years, we would be making lifelong investment decisions;buying a home with a click of a button. Technology has already minimized the role of agents and their work is mainly centered on paperwork and consultation. For all sorts of the auction, whether it’s a rent auction or a house auction, a platform will be created where the landlords and homeowners will upload their property details and tenants will bid on the price or rent. The resulting rent will be the final market rent rather than the landlord’s demand. The collection of rentals will also be fully automated. Gaming experiences have been totally changed by virtual reality. A similar concept would be applied toReal Estate Industry. It would be much easier to see homes than it is now, with the opportunity to see the whole house, every corner, without having to see it physically. VR can go much further than “walk through” a home, open closets, and cupboards, etc. interactively. It will let customers see what the light looks like at various times of day and year, and by superimposing furniture, sculpture, or even home repairs. Blockchain is a relatively new database type that has become the trendy solution for more secure storage of digital information. Simply defined as a technology that records the provenance of the digital asset. Blockchain would be a dominant tool for monitoring and tracking real estate transactions including payments and title history in the next 20 years.

Technology is halfway there to transform the real estate industry. Be prepared to adapt to the change. Your work today may not be there in 10 years and your work now might not be available in 10 years.

2008 Computex Preview: WiMAX, threat? opportunity?

Thursday, April 17, 2008

2008 Computex Taipei (a.k.a Taipei International Information Technology Show), the second largest IT show in the world, will start on June 3 to 7 at the TWTC Hall 1 & 3, Taipei International Convention Center (TICC), and TWTC Nangang, in conjunction with 2008 WiMAX Expo Taipei, which will start earlier at the Taipei Show Hall 2. With two IT-related industry shows will be concurrently showcased in different venues, it will bring on many convergences and opportunities for networking and mobile-related industries worldwide including Taiwan.

Since the Taipei Computer Association, Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), and Industrial Technology Research Institute preliminary imported the “WiMAX Forum Showcase & Conference” into the TICC, WiMAX-related topics were mostly focused by several worldwide media and industrial elites. In extremity, some technologies and solutions like eSNG, wireless medical care, wireless transmission, and mobile entertainment were showcased there. And the MOEA also signed MOUs with 5 world-class WiMAX companies to help the networking industry last year in Taiwan.

Even though the signing of MOUs and new technologies will bring opportunities for WiMAX-related industries, and the mobile devices will be progressively popular in the future and more slim like an UMPC, but some companies from information security industry were worried about the future trend because of invisible threats on the Internet.

As of “Asia-pacific IT Security Forum” and “IT Security Pavilion” of SecuTech Expo 2008, there were several changes on participation from IT industry, but due to a major impact of “Edison Chen’s photo scandal“, several crisis were exposed with improper habits on modern people when using the Internet.

There were several weak points on IM or P2P software, and USB mass storage devices. For example, Skype, a famous Internet telephony software, progressively became a hacking tool by several fraud groups although several enterprises had awareness on IM software and made several policies to prevent using them. According to a statistic on virus-infected users, even though there were 99% of Microsoft Windows users (infected by viruses), but a minor of 0.03% mobile device (e.g. Windows Mobile, Palm OS, etc.) users shouldn’t be unnoticed. If the infrastructure of WiMAX technology is matured, although it (WiMAX) will bring convergences and opportunities for networking and digital content industries and bring on mobile populations, as the fraud groups updated their crime tools and extended their platform into mobile devices, there will be a lot of risks for mobile and Internet users as they welcomed the WiMAX technology.

It’s a real deal that the WiMAX will bring different kind profits and benefits for different industries, but before the WiMAX became the trend, if Internet users didn’t cultivate proper habits on using the Internet, the WiMAX will still bring on threats for end-users and industries.

BC man is selling the boat from old TV series Gilligan’s Island

Tuesday, August 29, 2006

A man named George Schultz in Parksville, British Columbia is selling the boat from old TV series Gilligan’s Island at the cost of $99,000. The cruiser, originally cost about $290,000 in the 1960s.

“There have been a couple of modifications, so it doesn’t look exactly like the original,” said Shultz, a boat broker who’s selling the 36-foot Wheeler Express Cruiser for fellow Parksdale resident Scotty Taylor. “But it’s still the original boat.”

Originally, the boat’s name was The Blue Jacket.

“Just for the show, for a stage name, it was called the S.S. Minnow,” Shultz said. The name was a reference to Newton Minnow, once chairman of the FCC.

“He just liked the boat, he wanted to restore it, it was a nice looking boat, a wooden boat, a classic and he likes classic boats,” said Shultz. “The hole in the hull was actually the least of the repairs – the interior needed a lot more work”.

Someone later stole the plaque on the boat, but the 46-year-old boat still has the round life preserver with S.S. Minnow emblazoned on it and the skipper’s chair.
