Hiring A Contracted Painter}

Submitted by: Rose Ybarra

Many people face the tough decision of whether to hire a contractor or do their own home repairs when remodeling their house. On the one hand, hiring a contractor allows the homeowner to rest and relax, but people do not like to spend the money. On the other hand, doing the work yourself may not be such a good idea, in that the finished product may not come out as good as if a contractor does the work.

A contracted painter, for instance, is highly trained and skilled in the art of exterior house painting. These contractors can do wonders with your homes exterior, making your entire remodel come together very nicely. Many homeowners have no idea what they are doing when it comes to painting a house and often stumble in their attempts to do so. When performing expensive remodels to the entirety of your home, one can little afford mistakes and will not have the time to go back and redo work that may not look as they planned. This is where hiring a contracted painter to come in and do the work for you will always be a great asset to your project. Many do not see paying somebody for work that they feel they can do themselves is a sound financial investment. However, what many discover later is that hiring a painter to do the work for them actually is a sounder financial decision and investment for your home than doing the work themselves. What happens with many homeowners who try to complete the work themselves is they end up messing up the project to the point that they are forced to hire a professional to come out and fix what they have started. This is always going to cost more than if the homeowner had just hired a painter to begin with. This way, they would only pay the contractor and would not have to worry about the time wasted and materials purchased on their initial attempt at painting the house.

Finding a contracted painter who will leave your home looking fantastic is something many dread over when faced with the task of hiring a contractor. Homeowners do not like looking through the Yellow Pages or the Internet for a contracted painter, especially those who feel they are wasting their time in the first place in hiring on. However, many contractors are committed to providing each customer with excellent work and a fabulous finished product. There are just a few things a homeowner should look for when hiring a painter. One: Try to find some testimonials or referrals from the contractors past clients. Two: Many times, these referrals are not available. In these cases meet the contractor when he gives you an estimate. Three: If the contractor is rude and does not seem interested in your project, you probably want another painter. Four: If the painter is kind, respectful and genuinely interested in your project, you probably have found the right person for the job. Following these simple guidelines will help homeowners in weeding through the long list of contractors until they find one that will suit their needs.

Demonstrators protest Condoleezza Rice’s trip to Australia

Thursday, March 16, 2006

Anti-war demonstrators in Sydney, Australia on Thursday dubbed U.S. Secretary of State Dr Condoleezza Rice a “war criminal” and “murderer.” Two protesters were evicted and five people were arrested during protests against the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.

Dr Rice, on a three-day trip to Australia, said she understood why people found it hard to be positive about Iraq when all they saw on their television screens was violence.

Soon after Rice began her speech at the University of Sydney’s Conservatorium of Music, two protesters shouted from the rear of the auditorium, “Condoleezza Rice, you are a war criminal,” and “Iraqi blood is on your hands and you cannot wash that blood away.” Standing with their palms towards her, the young man and woman repeated their accusation until security intervened to remove them from the hall.

About 15 minutes into Rice’s address, a third protester appeared at a balcony door, interrupting her speech as she referred to freedom. “What kind of freedom are you talking about? You are a murderer,” said the demonstrator before he was quietly escorted from the hall. “I’m very glad to see that democracy is well and alive here at the university,” she said.

In her speech, Rice sought to justify the U.S. occupation of Iraq, describing Iraqis as now more free. One student asked about abuses committed by U.S. forces at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. She said the abuses had made her “sick to her stomach.” However, she defended Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where human rights groups say detainees are held in inhumane conditions and in detention flouting international laws.

Before Rice began her speech, about 50 protesters were gathered at the front gates of the Conservatorium. The group were confronted by police on horseback and by police dogs. Police used the horses to charge into the group of activists and push them back, as a police helicopter hovered.

A police spokeswoman said the group was blocking pedestrian access to the building and that police had spent more than 20 minutes warning them to move. The police then moved in and pushed the crowd back 20 metres. Police say five people have been charged with “hindering police in the execution of their duties.”

The “Stop the War Coalition” says Rice is a “war criminal” and is not welcome in Australia. The group’s spokeswoman, Anna Samson, says the protest is one of many planned in the lead-up to the third anniversary of the invasion and occupation of Iraq on March 20.

Paddy Gibson, from the University of Sydney’s Student’s Council, says the protest is in opposition to the Iraq war, and to the use of the University of Sydney’s campus to host Rice, “the most powerful woman in the world,” who they say is a war criminal. “They’re saying, ‘… you’ve got Sydney Uni’s support to stand up and peddle your murderous hate speeches,’ which is what we see it,” he said.

“You’ve got 180,000 people killed, as we said, for no other reason than strategic control of the region’s oil resources. And the anti-Muslim racism that’s been whipped up to justify this war is being felt by Sydney University students,” said Mr Gibson.

A vocational nurse working for Dr. John Capriotti, a plastic surgeon, was accused of setting the fire that wounded several and killed three people in Houston, Texas on March 28. She was allegedly trying to cover up the fact that she hadn’t completed the paperwork for an upcoming audit.

The fire began in Dr. Capriotti’s office on the fifth floor and quickly spread to the sixth. Arson investigators from the Houston Fire Department, the FBI and the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives had been working to determine the source of the fire.

Iran announced that it has started industrial scale production of nuclear fuel involving hundreds of centrifuges. The announcement comes as President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad reasserts his nation’s nuclear rights in the face of two rounds of sanctions by the UN Security Council, which is seeking a halt to such work.

Study observes masturbation and other sexual trends among US teens

Wednesday, August 3, 2011

A recently published nationwide survey of US teenagers indicates boys tend to masturbate more — and start younger — than girls. It also finds boys who masturbate are more likely to engage in safe sex than boys who don’t.

Dr. Cynthia L. Robbins, the study’s lead author from Indiana University in Indianapolis, spoke of the need for the academic community to focus more on masturbation. “Many adolescent boys and girls masturbate, and among sexually active teens masturbation is associated with other sexual behaviors and condom use. It is important to recognize that masturbation is an important and normal component of adolescent sexual development.”

The survey, named the National Survey of Sexual Health and Behavior (NSSHB), was supported by Church & Dwight, which makes Trojan condoms. A representative nationwide sample of 820 teens 14–17 years old participated in the study with parental permission. The findings were published Monday in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.

Male and female respondents were asked to note how frequently they masturbated in the past three months, the past year, and throughout their lifetime. They were also asked to recall whether they masturbated alone or with a partner, and also how often they used condoms.

Nearly three-fourths of boys reported having masturbated, compared to only less than half of girls. About half of boys reported masturbating twice or more per week, also higher than the 23 percent of girls. Masturbation rates for both genders increased along with age, though only boys were more likely to report having “recently” engaged in the activity as they grew older.

Among adolescents who engage in oral or vaginal sex, boys who masturbate were eight times more likely to use a condom than boys who don’t. A similar correlation was not observed for girls.

The researchers who conducted the study urge more open and educational discussion of this highly stigmatized topic. “The findings of this study together with existing publications on masturbation should be used by health care providers to inform, educate and reassure adolescents about masturbation to provide competent and comprehensive sexuality education in the clinical setting”.

Cremation: Burn, Baby, Burn

Cremation: Burn, Baby, Burn

by

Priyank Saxena

Lighting a funeral pyre may seem like an odd way to dispose of a dead body, but a version of that is how we dispose of many dead bodies in the United States today. Cremation, or incineration of a deceased individual’s remains, is the second most popular way to say goodbye to the dead, after burials. The practice dates back to ancient times, and today is considered not only cost-effective but also environmentally friendly.

Step-By-Step Guide to Cremation It might sound grim – and it is – but cremation involves more than simply lighting a match to someone. It’s actually a highly skilled art, which can only legally be carried out at a certified, licensed crematorium. Here are the (gruesome) steps involved… The body is sent to the crematorium, which can be attached to a funeral home or cemetery or can be an entirely separate entity. Some crematoriums allow the body to be viewed without having been embalmed before it is cremated. You can choose to have the body embalmed before cremation if you prefer to hold a wake several days after death. While most crematoriums require that bodies be cremated in containers, it can be as simple as a cardboard box or casket made from wooden planks. Some states allow people to be cremated without any container at all – each state has its own laws, so check first. Only one body can be cremated at a time as crematoriums are made to only handle the weight of one individual. It is not possible to cremate two people together, although later you can co-mingle their ashes, if desired. It takes about two-four hours for a body to be cremated at 1,5000 – 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, depending on its size. After the body is cremated, there will still be some remains which have not turned to ash, namely dental fillings, hip work, some bone fragments. They are swept back into the cremation chamber and put into a stainless steel cooling pan. Items like gold fillings can be given to the family, other things such as bone fragments are processed to size and mixed back with the ashes. Urns are not required by law, although it may be preferable if you want your loved one’s ashes to be interred in a cemetery. If you do not choose to purchase an urn but want to keep the ashes, the crematorium will probably give them to you in a temporary plastic container (Tupperware sure has its uses!). Be aware that not all religions are in favor of cremation. Orthodox Jews, Muslims, Eastern Orthodox religions and some fundamental Christians oppose cremation, while other faiths allow a choice between cremation and burial. Unique Ways to Dispose of Ashes People choose to dispose of their loved ones’ ashes in a variety of ways. Sometimes they are buried with a gravestone placed above, so that the family has a place to gather and grieve. Sometimes they are placed in a columbarium, or special niche for urns where ashes of the dead are on permanent display. Here are some more unique ways to use the ashes… Make your own coral reef. Eternal Reefs, Inc, helps people memorialize their loved ones forever by replacing “cremation urns and ash scattering with a permanent environmental living legacy”. The ashes are mixed with concrete and used to help build underwater coral reefs, which both provide a funky memorial to the dead while helping the environment at the same time. San Francisco company Creative Remains employs a team of artists to design unusual and unique housing for the ashes. With their help, you can turn your Great Aunt Mabel’s violin or Grandpa Henry’s favorite cigar case into a permanent home for their remains. Art from Ashes, originally for dead pets only, reportedly now also makes art from human remains. They incorporate the ashes into everyday objects, such as paperweights, perfume bottles, and even knobs for walking sticks. Perfect Memorials makes “cremation jewellery”. Their small teardrop necklace urns, for example, allow you to keep ashes, a lock of hair or even dried ceremonial flowers all together in one place as a lasting memory – and all for just $34.95 (engraveable). So keep Mom close to your heart forever – literally – with a beautiful necklace made from, umm, her! Based in Redding, California, Hold Me Urns makes personalized teddy bears which have tiny velvet-lined pouches inside to hold ashes. The pouches can also be made from the clothes of a loved one. The bears don’t come cheap, however – they cost about $80 each. Other uses for human remains include turning them into windchimes, clock, birdbaths, motorcycle gas tanks, firework displays and even sending them into outer space… Funky Facts While cremation is naturally a straightforward process, sometimes things go wrong… Silicone breast implants can cause problems during a cremation. Remains of the body can stick to it, meaning the body may be lumpy instead of turning to a fine ash. In the past, unscrupulous crematorium personnel were known to occasionally steal lumps of gold and silver from dental fillings. Better checks now prohibit this, and also make sure that when you get Uncle Bernie’s ashes, you really are getting Uncle Bernie’s ashes (and not the ashes of crusty old Mr Cartwright from the nursing home next door). Disneyland has reportedly become a popular place to surreptitiously scatter cremated remains, although this practice has resulted in rides being shut down and assiduous cleaning tactics employed by Magic Kingdom staff. As the number of cremations in the United States rises, so does the number of abandoned urns, either lying unclaimed in funeral homes or found in attics and basements after relatives of the deceased have passed on themselves. Some states require funeral homes to store ashes for a minimum period of time, others have no laws. According to the Cremation Association of North America, only six percent of deaths resulted in cremation in 1974. In 2006, that number had reached almost 34 percent. Cremation isn’t just for people who can’t afford burials. Proponents of cremation point out that while cremating a loved one can result in thousands of dollars in savings, it also is environmentally friendly and has no necessary merchandise or product orientation. It also makes sense for people who became very ill before death, and do not want friends and family seeing their bodies in a wasted state. If you are considering cremation either for yourself or a loved one, it may be worth visiting a funeral home and/or crematorium to learn what your state laws are, and what will eventually take place after death. It’s best to know beforehand, than to leave it all up to chance. You might also want to have a consultation about what to put in your will, to ensure that your preferred rite of passage will take place. What happens to the ashes of a loved one often depends on the written instructions they left behind, not the wishes of the living.

Wikinews interviews Anda Banikos, local council candidate in South Gippsland, Australia

Wednesday, September 15, 2021

Since June 2019, the people of South Gippsland Shire, located at the southernmost tip of Australia, have been without a local council, after a state government inquiry found “high levels of tension” within the council. Administrators were appointed by the Victorian state government in July 2019, who have governed the shire since then. However, South Gippsland’s council is scheduled to be restored with an election to be held via post from October 5-22, 2021.

Wikinews interviewed one of the candidates standing in this election, Anda Banikos, an independent candidate running in the Coastal-Promontory Ward. The Coastal-Promontory ward covers towns such as Venus Bay, Waratah Bay, Yanakie, Foster, Port Welshpool, and Toora, and elects three councillors to the South Gippsland Shire Council.

Raising Up A Woman: My Daughter, My Heritage

by

Sheila Webster-Heard –

From her highchair, she gazes at me with admiration. Enchanting brown eyes follow me as I bustle about cleaning the handful of Honey Nut Os shes tossed on the floor.

Shes a year old, gorgeous and her daddys joy, and shes smiling so sweetly; at her tender age shes already taking in tidbits of information that will shape her into the woman she will eventually become. I can’t help but think of the position I’m in. I have a huge responsibility to her.

By my example, my daughter, Alysia, will learn to respect herself and value her mind, body and spirit.

Through my actions, I’ll teach her to make sensible choices. I’ll advise her that people will judge her by her attire and by the company she keeps. Ill gently steer her away from anyone and everyone questionable in her life. I’ll always be in the background watching, leading and guiding.

I’ll take a strong interest in her abilities, and when she becomes an adult, I’ll think highly of this stunning young woman with the amazing personality and numerous talents.

She is learning everyday, from the way I interact with her father, how to relate to men. She sees a loving union between us, and she will use it as a guide for her own relationships, but I will also instruct her on the benefits of using her head instead of her heart.

I’ll rejoice when she makes the right choice in a mate, but I won’t ridicule her if she makes the wrong choice. In fact, I hope to instill so much love in her that she will only attract loving and supportive people.

I’ll always speak honestly about life because what I tell her from this point forward will shape the way she views the world. This is precious cargo, you see; an African-American youngster destined for great things.

And great she will be! I knew this the moment the ultrasound technician told me I would be blessed with her. I realized that being her mother would be the most important job I would ever have. I thought about how, if my husband and I instilled in her all the hard-knock lessons weve learned through the years, she would be tough, intelligent and well-rounded. She would be knowledgeable. I was more than ready for the challenge because, sadly, I’ve seen the other side.

I know the mothers whod rather invest more time in their latest boyfriends instead of spending time with their daughters.

I know the mothers who leave their daughters with whomever is willing to baby-sit, even the new boyfriend; a stranger. Too bad mom cant see that baby girl is afraid and would rather be home with her, secure and protected.

Unfortunately, I’ve seen those same daughters, who had so much potential, grow up and try hard to pull themselves out of the cycle of abuse and neglect to no avail. I’ve witnessed them reaching out for someone, anyone, to fill them up on the inside with the love distant mommy and absent daddy wouldnt spare. Sometimes theyve reached out to the wrong crowd. Sometimes the end results were tragic.

Thankfully, I was raised with strong women in my life. I had aunts and grandmothers and my own mother who were excellent examples of what a nurturer should be.

My childhood wasn’t perfect, but I revisit it with joy when I remember all the things mom helped me to accomplish. I learned invaluable life lessons from her. She was always nearby; she shaped me into the woman I am today.

I feel honored that I, too, have the opportunity to mold my princess into a queen and, one day, her own daughter will admire her from a distance. I’ll be there also, embracing them both. My broad smile will be a declaration of triumph; our legacy of successful black women continuing.

Indonesian Navy declares crew of 53 dead after submarine sinks in Bali Strait

Tuesday, April 27, 2021

On Saturday, the Indonesian Navy announced its submarine KRI Nanggala 402, which had lost contact early morning 4:30 am local time on Wednesday, had sunk and cracked off in the Bali Strait during a training exercise. The Navy also declared the submarine’s crew of 53 dead, and said the wreckage was found.

According to Air Marshall Hadi Tjahjanto, pictures received were of the parts of the submarine such as the rear vertical rudder, anchors, outer pressure body, and embossed dive rudder.

The Navy stated on Saturday, the submarine was now considered sunk, not merely missing, having previously said that the oxygen supply would have run out by Saturday morning.

Per reports, items were found from the submarine that included a bottle of grease, prayer mats and a piece of metal pipe. The ones found near the last location of the submarine were parts of the submarine itself, and would not have gotten out unless there was water pressure, Tjahjanto said.

Tjahjanto also said there was an oil spill in the area and the debris were indications the submarine had a leakage due to diving too deep, or released the oil while rising to the surface.

The search team focused on determining the exact location of the submarine, but authorities warned it would be hard to do any salvage operation because of the deep waters.

The Singapore Navy’s MV Swift Rescue submarine rescue ship helped in the effort and deployed a robot which took the images. Other countries including Malaysia, the United States, India and Australia aided search for potential rescue. KRI Rigel, an Indonesian ship, scanned the area where the submarine was presumed to have sunk using multi-beam sonar and a magnetometer.

According to military chief Yudo Margono, the scan determined the submarine to be at a depth of 850 metres. According to Al Jazeera, it was well below its survivable limit of 500 metres. “The cracks happened gradually in some parts when it went down”, Margono said.
