Outstanding Presentations Start In The Mind: Five Presentation Skills Secrets For Overcoming Public Speaking Anxiety

By Ed Sykes

Public speaking presents such a challenge for many people. In the Book of Lists, public speaking anxiety and making a presentation constitute the number one fear; the fear of dying is number two. Like the old saying goes, ‘People would rather be in the grave than make a presentation.’ You see people sweat, shake, and quiver while they are speaking. Sometimes, employees bypass promotions, and business owners bypass business opportunities rather than give a presentation. I saw a manager who was on the corporate fast track quickly become derailed because she couldn’t complete her presentation in front of senior management.

So what do great speakers do to prepare themselves to be great presenters? They prepare their minds to give a great presentation. That’s right; it all starts in your mind. How can you develop a great speaker’s mindset and start giving outstanding presentations? The following are five secrets for powerful public speaking:

1. Believe It So That You Can Achieve It

I am approached by people who say, ‘I can’t speak in public,’ ‘I am a bad speaker,’ or ‘I could never speak in public.’ Without hearing them speak, I say, ‘You’re right.’ Because once you make those negative statements, they become self-fulfilling prophesies. When you say, ‘I am a bad speaker,’ your subconscious mind is thinking, ‘Well, he or she said it, so it must be true; so I will act like a bad speaker.’ Positive speaking attitude (PSA) is one of the first things I work on during my presentation coachings. Replace the negative speaking attitude with a PSA to master your self talk and improve your presentation skills. Instead of saying, ‘I am a bad speaker,’ say the following:

* ‘I am improving my public speaking abilities everyday in everyway.’

* ‘Every opportunity to make a presentation is an opportunity for success.’

* ‘I am a good public speaker today; and, with continued practice, I will be a better public speaker tomorrow.’

* ‘I am mastering my presentation skills everyday!’

When you make these positive affirmations, your subconscious mind hears it and says, ‘Yeah, I am improving,’ or ‘Let me speak because it is an opportunity for success,’ or ‘I am mastering my speaking skills.’

Manage your self talk for a PSA. You will feel a new confident attitude concerning public speaking.

2. Think About What You Want to Accomplish

I will ask the question, ‘What do you want to accomplish with your presentation?’ Many times I will be on the receiving end of a blank stare or the student might say, ‘I just want them to listen to me.’

Take time to think about what you want to accomplish by giving your presentation. Is it that you want to entertain the audience, do you want to persuade them on an important issue, or maybe you want the audience to take action after hearing your presentation. Going into your presentation knowing what you want to accomplish creates focus and is a big confidence builder.

3. Visualize Success

Recently, I had the opportunity to speak at an association conference with over five thousand people in the audience. Joy, my wife, was sitting in the audience with our friend Jim who came to hear me speak for the first time. As I was about to speak, Jim leaned over and asked Joy if I was nervous speaking in front of such a large group of people. Without blinking an eye, Joy said, ‘He was born for this day. He saw this day coming when he first started speaking.’

I visualized that day long before it happened. Whenever I give a presentation, I take time to visualize a successful presentation and positive outcome. The more details I include in my visualizations, the more vivid and real it becomes for me. The night before the presentation I will find a quiet place at home or, if I am on the road, a hotel room, and meditate to start the visualization process. I will visualize my drive to the event, greeting the host and audience, and how my powerful presentation will sound and look on that day. I will also visualize the audience’s positive response to the presentation.

Take time to visualize the details of giving a great presentation. Like the old saying goes, ‘Fake it ’til you make it.’ If you visualize you are a great speaker, you will take the steps and create opportunities for yourself to become a great speaker.

Visualize that the audience wants to hear your message and they want you to do well. Remember, it’s their time also and they want to receive value out of your speech.

4. Own the Room

Whenever I speak, I ‘own the room.’ I mentally tell myself that for the next thirty minutes, hour, etc., I own the room. The corporation, association, or government may own the building or venue I am speaking in, but during the time I am speaking, I am the owner of the room and the audience will be my guests, my friends. That way I am always in control to give an outstanding presentation.

Think of your speaking area as your house, your home, your castle. When you invite friends into your home, aren’t you in control and want to provide a safe, entertaining environment for your guests? The same is true for your speaking audience; you want to provide a safe, entertaining, and enriching experience for them.

I always say, ‘Giving presentations is not about me, it’s about you (the audience).’ What I mean is that if I am constantly thinking about how I sound, look, and feel while I speak, I am not thinking about what I can share with my audience. Concentrate on the value you will give to your audience members and you will never go wrong.

5. Eat the Elephant

Many times I hear the following:

‘I could never speak in front of a group of people, but one-on-one I am fine.’

Well, I ask, ‘How do you eat the elephant?’ Break the elephant into smaller pieces. It is the same when you ‘digest’ the audience. Don’t think of the audience as a whole, think of the audience as individuals ready to hear your message. Concentrate on thinking of your audience as individuals, and your message will come across that way to the individual audience members.

Follow these five secrets for creating a positive mindset for confident public speaking. Overcoming your public speaking anxiety will improve your presentation skills and create new opportunities for you through public speaking.

Emirates plane crash-lands in Dubai

Friday, August 5, 2016

On Wednesday, an Emirates Boeing 777 crash-landed in Dubai with 282 passengers and 18 crew on board, according to the airline. This resulted in the death of a firefighter, Jasim Issa Mohammed Hassan, who died fighting the fire at the crash. The Director-General of the UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority, Saif Al Suwaidi, praised Jasim Issa Mohammed Hassan’s sacrifice in saving hundreds of passengers.

According to passenger accounts, the pilot announced an emergency landing minutes before the crash. Then the airliner, flight EK52, was engulfed in smoke at landing and soon after burst into flames. Passengers spoke of their fear.

The airport was shut down for four hours after the incident and all crew members and passengers on the flight from India were accounted for and safe, with fourteen reported hospitalised with minor injuries.

The cause of the crash has not been officially announced, however reports indicate the plane’s landing gear may not have deployed as the plane landed. An aviation safety consultant, in remarks to Australia’s ABC News, noted safely and efficiently evacuating all the passengers was a significant achievement, considering the size of the aircraft.

The airline said two people on the flight were Australian, eleven from the United Arab Emirates, 24 from the the UK, and 226 from India. The co-pilot of the crashed plane was an Australian with approximately 7,000 hours flying experience, according to Emirates chairman Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, who also said the crash was not due to any fault in security.

U.S. government to improve recruitment for civil service jobs

Tuesday, May 2, 2006

According to the Washington Post, nearly sixty percent of the federal government’s workforce will be eligible for retirement over the next ten years; with ninety percent of senior executive service officials expected to do so. Besides depleting Social Security funds, baby boomers will once again leave a big impression on the American workforce and economy. Calling it a “federal retirement tsunami,” the United States Office of Personnel Management (the bureau responsible for government human resources) is preparing for this event in a few manners. In a news release today by the bureau, Director Linda Springer announced that the office would be releasing a major media campaign in efforts to recruit future employees.

With only twenty four percent of United States citizens with a bachelor degree or higher, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, it’s no wonder it has been difficult to attract qualified or interested employees for federal government positions; particularly young people. “We’ve been hearing for so long about how incompetent and shady the government is, but a lot don’t understand the benefits,” said Howard University sophomore Victoria Hooks.

“The challenge is clear, and we are hard at work… with a 21st Century approach to the workplace, the federal government will ride the retirement wave and set the standard for a modern workplace… It will be a modern workplace, one that requires innovative training and encourage more flexibility by managers. The federal workforce will be one that the American people can count on,” said Springer in support of the initiatives for recruitment. Other efforts for recruitment will also include additional employment benefits such as special salaries and relocation bonuses, especially for women.

The recruitment advertisements will reveal themselves in a series of four commercials around the country beginning in mid May 2006.

Small aircraft crashes into building in New York City

Wednesday, October 11, 2006

A small aircraft struck an apartment building in New York this afternoon, killing the pilot and a flight instructor. Cory Lidle, a pitcher for the New York Yankees baseball team, was the registered owner of the aircraft and is believed to have been piloting it; his passport was found on the scene. The flight instructor was Tyler Stanger.

The plane, a Cirrus SR20 with registration number N929CD, hit the 26th floor of the Belaire Condominium, a 50 story brick luxury residential building on the Upper East Side at 524 East 72nd Street at York Avenue near the East River in Manhattan, New York City, of which the first 20 floors are a hospital. An eyewitness, present half a block from the building, reported that the plane hit the building, creating an enormous fireball, broke in two and crashed down onto on the street below. Authorities received a 911 call reporting a crash at 2:42 p.m. Eastern time.

New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg gave a press conference at approximately 5:20 p.m. Eastern time to report that the plane was occupied by a flight instructor and a student pilot, but as next-of-kin had not been able to be notified, the identities of the two people on the plane would not be released at this time.

Apartments were seen to be engulfed in flames. The FBI has stated that it was not an intentional attack. The New York area was grey and overcast during the time at crash; however, visibility was not hampered.

After an hour and a half, the fire was extinguished by the FDNY. According to CNN Television ten people have been injured, six of them firefighters. The New York Times, however, reports that eleven firefighters have been injured.

Initial reports suggested that a helicopter was involved, but the FAA has stated that it was a fixed-wing aircraft. CNN Television reported that it was a single-engine fixed-wing plane which left Teterboro Airport, a busy General Aviation airport in New Jersey, circled the Statue of Liberty was tracked on radar until it was lost near the 59th Street Bridge, that the plane may have been having fuel problems or fuel pump problems, and that it was “a pilot in distress.”

Wallace Sines, a source for CNN stated he believes the plane was a Cirrus SR-20 with an installed parachute, which did not deploy. The whole-plane parachute system may have saved the lives of the aircraft occupants had it been safely deployed clear of buildings, but the system is not designed to prevent the trauma associated with a plane impacting a builing. The Cirrus SR-20 was introduced in 2001 and the Cirrus line of 4-seater aircraft has since become one of the most purchased single engine aircraft in the world. The SR-20 does not normally carry an airline-style flight-data recorder, but some are equipped with GPS equipment which logs flight direction, speed and altitude.

The aircraft was owned by baseball player Cory Lidle. He was on board reported by AP. Lidle was killed, according to reports. CNN Television reported that the FBI stated he was at the controls as the only occupant of the plane, and that his passport was found on the ground below the accident.

A little over an hour and a half after the crash, the fire was extinguished after 39 fire units and over 100 fire fighters responded.

The White House has said that there has been no change in the terror threat alert level and that President Bush is being updated constantly.

La Guardia airport was temporarily restricted to no take offs from other airports, however by 4:10 Eastern Time, CNN Television reported that all New York-area airports were open.

CNN Television announced at 3:50 p.m. Eastern Time that as of a few minutes earlier, NORAD is putting fighter aircraft on patrol over certain major American cities as a precautionary measure similar to the actions taken after the 9/11 attacks as a “just in case” measure. It also reported that tomorrow is the 6th anniversary of the attack on the USS Cole in Aden, Yemen.

Moments after the crash, there was a drop in the New York Stock Exchange, however it quickly returned to normal after it was reported that the crash was an accident.

The New York Yankees organization confirmed the plane is registered to Cory Lidle of the New York Yankees, who was planning to fly from New York to Florida, and that some unnamed member of the Yankees organization was on the plane.

One eye-witness interviewed by the BBC stated: “I was wondering why the plane was doing acrobatics and then the next thing I knew was that it had crashed into the building.”She also added that the plane was a small, white, 4-seater winged aircraft and not a helicopter as many news agencies were reporting it to be.

CNN Television broadcast reports from eyewitnesses who reported:

 • A pilot who saw the impact stated, “It looked like a pilot who was desperately trying to get to an airport.”
 • Another eyewitness who saw the event from the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, also referred to the incident as appearing as if the plane was “desperately trying to get to LaGuardia” and that as to whether he “clipped” the building, or struck it directly, that “he hit it dead on.”
 • “I heard a buzzing noise and then an explosion which looked like a mushroom cloud.”

7 Types of Cosmetic Dentistry Procedure

by

Robert Melkonyan

Cosmetic dentistry has gained popularity over the years and these days, when the pressure to look good has reached the ultimate high, it is a lucrative business considered by many dentists as their bread and butter. The appearance of teeth is important to the appearance of the whole face. If teeth are crooked, stained, or missing, the person loses some or all his or appeal, at least as far as first impressions are concerned. Thats why people take pains to have their teeth fixed or improved. Beauty these days can be quite costly and time-consuming, but many consider the results worth all the trouble.

One of the most common services offered by dentists practising cosmetic dentistry is teeth whitening, also known as teeth bleaching. Teeth whitening is deemed as an instant self-esteem boost, especially by people who have long been embarrassed about their yellow-tinted or gray-tinted teeth. There are many reasons why teeth loses its original whiteness, and teeth whitening is the solution to get it back. Teeth whitening products contain a peroxide ingredient, which is responsible for bleaching the enamel in order to make teeth appear lighter in color. The strength of the teeth whitening treatment depends on the amount of the peroxide ingredient. There are 10%, 16%, and 22% percentages of peroxide ingredient these days. Another common cosmetic dentistry service is the use of dental implants to replace permanently lost teeth. Dental implants have saved many people from the sure fate of never having to smile in public again. Dental implants are teeth replacements that stay stuck in the gums so the wearer wont have to worry about losing them. The success of dental implants depends on the presence of supporting bones in the site where the implants are to be placed. Another cosmetic dentistry service that is similar to dental implants is dentures. Dentures are also teeth replacements but they can be taken out of the mouth. One of the more complicated cosmetic dentistry procedures is bone grafting. Bone grafting is usually a last resort, the only method left to fix tooth or teeth loss caused by periodontal diseases or some other reason. People who may consider bone grafting are those who have gone toothless for the longest time and no longer have bones to support their jaw line; in other words, people who are not qualified for dental implants may rely on bone grafting to replace their lost tooth or teeth. Among teenagers, the most popular form of cosmetic dentistry is the wearing of braces. Braces are basically made up of metal things that work to align the position of the teeth to correct any unwanted delineation. In the past, the wearing of braces was considered social suicide. Nowadays, however, the wearing of braces has become more accepted. Other common cosmetic dentistry services are the wearing of crowns and veneers. These things help put just the right amount of pressure on the teeth to steer them away from rebellious growth and create the perfect smile for the wearer.

Small plane crashes in central Berlin

Friday, July 22, 2005

A small single-engine ultralight aircraft has crashed on a lawn between the Reichstag building, the seat of the German parliament, and the Bundeskanzleramt, the seat of the chancellor, in Berlin. The aircraft crashed at approximately 2000CET. Amateur footage aired by the ARD shows the plane rapidly descending before crashing on the lawn and bursting into flames. Witnesses at the scene were inconclusive about the heading of the plane. Some stated that it was targeting the Reichstag while others said that the pilot tried to steer away from it. He was killed in the crash. People near the scene attempted to fight the fire with hand-held extinguishers, however the aircraft was mostly destroyed by the time the emergency services arrived.

The German authorities have ruled out terrorism. Police are saying that the pilot’s wife has been missing since Monday and they had suspected that he might have something to do with the disappearance. It is possible that he might have committed suicide to avoid prosecution.

Gastric bypass surgery performed by remote control

Sunday, August 21, 2005

A robotic system at Stanford Medical Center was used to perform a laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery successfully with a theoretically similar rate of complications to that seen in standard operations. However, as there were only 10 people in the experimental group (and another 10 in the control group), this is not a statistically significant sample.

If this surgical procedure is as successful in large-scale studies, it may lead the way for the use of robotic surgery in even more delicate procedures, such as heart surgery. Note that this is not a fully automated system, as a human doctor controls the operation via remote control. Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is a treatment for obesity.

There were concerns that doctors, in the future, might only be trained in the remote control procedure. Ronald G. Latimer, M.D., of Santa Barbara, CA, warned “The fact that surgeons may have to open the patient or might actually need to revert to standard laparoscopic techniques demands that this basic training be a requirement before a robot is purchased. Robots do malfunction, so a backup system is imperative. We should not be seduced to buy this instrument to train surgeons if they are not able to do the primary operations themselves.”

There are precedents for just such a problem occurring. A previous “new technology”, the electrocardiogram (ECG), has lead to a lack of basic education on the older technology, the stethoscope. As a result, many heart conditions now go undiagnosed, especially in children and others who rarely undergo an ECG procedure.

Consumer Reports Are Your Best Means To Choose Right Products For Your Needs

By Marie Mardeko

On every occasion you come to a decision to invest your money on a product, whether it’s a digital camera, car, a piece of equipment or a packaged foodstuff or any product as a matter of fact, you would like to confirm you make the most of and get your money’s full worth. On the other hand, you can’t in fact make that decision until after you have bought the product. So therefore, there is either one out of two results that you can look forward to. You might be happy with your acquisition, or you might not. It is far better if you can forecast what the result would be earlier than you come to a decision to purchase the product under consideration. Moreover despite the fact that you cannot make out the future, a useful means that you can take advantage of is the consumer report online.

Consumer reports are articles written by genuine users or by autonomous third party individuals. The basis of the consumer report is that they are truthful and unbiased, with the intention that the consumer report that you study provides you a precise review of the item under consideration. As a result, if there’s a specific feature of a car that concerns you, you can carry out further investigation on it by means of the consumer report.

One more explanation why consumer reports can assist you is given that they are authored either by autonomous specialists or by individuals and end users like you. An end user created consumer report is useful given that it is authored by a common person who has used the product himself, for a common person who intends to buy that product. So, you can easily make out and be on familiar terms with the benefits and drawbacks that are listed in a consumer report that was authored by an end user. Consumer reports that are authored by an autonomous specialist will have comprehensive details and professional investigation on wide-ranging and detailed product facts and figures.

For more informative buy preferably, you must go through more than a few consumer reports at all times if at all it is possibly for you. The more details you get, the more educated you will be. New Zealand policewoman found moonlighting as prostitute

Thursday, July 20, 2006

An Auckland, New Zealand policewoman, who has not been named, has been working part-time as a prostitute. Her employer, Auckland City Police, did not know that she had been working as a prostitute for a limited time. She has been able to keep her police job.

Prostitution became legal in New Zealand in 2003.

The police officer was prostituting herself because of financial difficulties. A person working in the Christchurch sex industry said “It’s usually either for debts or drugs.”

She is now undergoing counselling.

The New Zealand Police would not comment on how long she had been acting as a prostitute.

Lyn Provost, Deputy Commissioner, said “the nature of the secondary employment was incompatible with policing and would never have been approved.”

The police say that if a police officer was to seek secondary employment then it must be signed off, this job hadn’t been. It would have been a conflict of interest.

Ron Mark, New Zealand First Party Law and Order spokesman, said “the case is concerning, because while prostitution is legal, it is associated with criminal activity.”

A representative of the New Zealand Prostitutes’ Collective (NZPC) said there were law students and doctors who were sex workers.

“NZPC’s philosophy is that we support people that are in that secondary employment … we support them for their sexual health needs or any other needs – emotionally, physically, spiritually – that we can accommodate.” a representative of the New Zealand Prostitutes’ Collective said.
