Australia: Victorian government to trial driverless vehicles on public roads

Saturday, August 12, 2017

Yesterday, the state government of Victoria, Australia announced their decision to trial self-driving vehicles on two of the state’s major connecting motorways, the CityLink and Tullamarine Freeway. The trial is to use autonomous vehicles from automobile companies including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, and Tesla. The two-year trial is to have three phases.

The cars are to drive alongside commuters, but in public testing a driver is always to be present, as Victorian law requires drivers always keep a hand on the steering wheel. However, in occasional closures of the Burnley Tunnel, with no other drivers to endanger, the cars are to be tested with nobody in the vehicle.

Lane assist, cruise control, and recognition of traffic signs are in the trial’s first phase, expected to complete before the end of the year. This includes monitoring how the driver-less cars respond to road conditions, including lane markings and electronic speed signs.

“Victoria is at the forefront of automated vehicle technology — we’re investing in this trial to explore ways that this technology can be used to reduce crashes and keep people safe on our roads”, said Luke Donnellan, the Victorian Minister for Roads and Road Safety. He noted, “Ninety per cent of the fault of accidents is human error […] so we know that if we can take out human error we will have less accidents”.

Tim Hansen, Victoria Police’s Acting Assistant Commissioner, said that police had founded a project team to investigate how self-driving vehicles would change policing on roads. “Can we intercept vehicles more safely to avoid pursuits and ramming?”, he asked.

The trial is a partnership between the state government, Victoria’s road management authority VicRoads, owner of the CityLink toll road Transurban, and insurance company RACV.

Breast Augmentation An Overview

Submitted by: Arnold Grey

Breast augmentation, known as augmentation mammoplasty is becoming both more common and more safe in all health aspects. Surgical procedures to enhance the breast the size (breast enlargement), and/or shape (breast lift) of a woman s breasts are considered elective cosmetic surgery. However breast reductions and breast reconstruction are considered corrective plastic surgery. For these reasons some insurance plans may cover the corrective breast surgeries.

There can be a number of motivations behind breast augmentation and some of the most common reasons are:

1. Enhancing and balancing body structure keeping the size of the breasts in consideration. Women with small breast size opt for breast enlargement.

2. General reduction in breast size is frequently observed after pregnancy and breast feeding. Breast lifts are commonly done to reshape sagging breast or implants can be used to restore breast size.

3. There can be a variation between the two breast sizes; breast augmentation procedures can be used to bring them to same size.

A comprehensive discussion with a surgeon is recommended before breast augmentation. Every surgery candidate should gain clarity about the process, and it s realistic benefits along with understanding the side effects and risks. In surgical terms, a breast implant can be inserted behind or in front of the breast s chest muscles to increase the size of the bust-line. Breast augmentation may impart added confidence and improve self-image, however many mistakenly believe that changes your appearance slightly will change your looks as well as your outlook and this is an unhealthy approach. It is necessary to be healthy and have a healthy self-image before seeking out breast augmentation.

There are two most common types of implants:

?Silicon shell implant filled with silicone gel, and

?Silicone shell implant filled with salt-water (saline).

Saline-filled implants are done without any restrictions. For gel-filled implants, permission is necessary from FDA (Food and Drug Administration).

However common, breast augmentation is surgery so there are possibilities for unexpected outcomes as well as health risks. Capsular contracture is the most common problem that is experienced after breast augmentation. It generally happens when the scar tissue around the implant begins to tighten. It will make the breast feel harder and uncomfortable. Removal or replacement of the implant can solve this problem. Some swelling and pain may appear due to excessive bleeding during the surgery. There is always a threat of infection soon after a surgery. It takes time to heal and any exposure to infectious elements can cause trouble.

There can be adverse effects on nipples after a breast reduction, breast lift or breast implant surgery. They tend to get overly sensitive, hard and even go numb in some cases. A breast implant may break or leak under certain circumstances, and leakage of silicon implants in particular can lead to many complications effecting health and appearance. It can happen due to excessive pressure, defects or other reasons.

Young women or those planning a family should find relief in that breast augmentation does not cause any side-effects during or after pregnancy. Breast milk will be available for the child within a week. There are no instances of breast cancers amongst the women who underwent breast augmentation. It is necessary to detect complications at an early stage to prevent impacts, therefore regular post-surgery consults with your plastic surgeon is advised.

Breast augmentation is done at various hospitals and cosmetic surgery clinics and private practices. The cost of the largely surgery is effected by the type of facilities that are provided. The cost varies greatly with the skill and experience of the surgeon as well. Local anesthesia will be given to the patient in order to carry out the surgery. Complete healing will take a couple of weeks.

Andrea Muizelaar on fashion, anorexia, and life after ‘Top Model’

Monday, November 26, 2007

In the 18 months since Andrea Muizelaar was crowned winner of the reality TV series Canada’s Next Top Model, her life has been a complete whirlwind. From working in a dollar store in her hometown of Whitby, Ontario, to modeling haute couture in Toronto, she had reached her dream of becoming a true Top Model.

But at what cost? Unknown to casual television viewers, Muizelaar had been enveloped in the eating disorder anorexia nervosa, which inevitably became too much for her to bear. She gave up modeling and moved back to Whitby, where she sought treatment for her disorder, re-entered college, and now works at a bank. Where is she now? Happy and healthy, she says.

Recently Andrea Muizelaar sat down with Wikinews reporter Mike Halterman in a candid interview that stretched to nearly two hours, as she told all about her hopes and aspirations, her battle with anorexia, and just what really happened on Canada’s Next Top Model.

Fur fans flock to Toronto’s Furnal Equinox 2019

Monday, March 25, 2019

From March 15 to 17, the Canadian city of Toronto played host to the tenth Furnal Equinox, an annual event dedicated to the “furry fandom.” Wikinews attended. Programming ranged from music to gender, science to art, covering dozens of aspects of the varied subculture. The event’s featured guests were visual artists Moth Monarch and Cat-Monk Shiro, as well as the co-owners of US fursuit costume builders Don’t Hug Cacti.

The event raised nearly CDN$11,000 for Pet Patrol, a non-profit rescue organization in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, run by volunteers. This exceeded their goal of $10,000, the funds needed to finish a rural sanctuary. The furry community is well-known for their charitable efforts. Along with direct donations, the funds were raised through a charity auction offering original artwork, and a fursuit design by guests of honour “Don’t Hug Cacti.” Last year, Furnal Equinox raised funds for a farm animal sanctuary.

While only 10–15% of people within the fandom own a fursuit according to a 2011 study, event organizers reported this year 908 of the 2240 attendees at Furnal Equinox brought at least one elaborate outfit to the event. The outfits are usually based on original characters, known as “fursonas”.

Guests of Honour Cherie and Sean O’Donnell, known within the community as “Lucky and Skuff Coyote”, held a session on fursuit construction on Saturday afternoon. The married couple are among the most prominent builders in the fandom, under the name Don’t Hug Cacti. The scale of their business was evident, as Sean had made over a thousand pairs of “handpaws”, costume gloves.

The couple encouraged attendees to continue developing their technique, sharing that all professional fursuit makers had developed different techniques. They felt that they learned more from failed projects than successful ones, citing the Chuck Jones quote that “every artist has thousands of bad drawings,” and that you have to work through them to achieve. Cherie, known as Lucky, recalled receiving a Sylvester the Cat plush toy from a Six Flags theme park at age 10. She promptly hollowed the toy out, turning it into a costume. Creating a costume isn’t without its hazards: the company uses 450°F (232°C) glue guns. They’re “like sticking your hand in an oven.”

Other programming included improv comedy, dances, life drawing of fursuiters, a review of scientific research by a research group at four universities called FurScience, a pin collector’s social, and workshops in writing.

The “Dealer’s Den” hall was expanded this year, with even more retailers and artists. While many offered “furry” versions of traditional products, at least one business focused on “pushing the boundaries of fursuit technology.” Along with 3D printing a bone-shaped name tag when Wikinews visited, Grivik was demonstrating miniature computer screens that could be used as “eyes” for a fursuit. The electronic displays projected an animation of eyes looking around, blinking occasionally. The maker has also developed “a way to install a camera inside suit heads, to improve fursuiter visibility.” He hopes the tech would reduce suiting risks and accidents. Without the need for eyeholes, fursuit makers would have “more options for building different eyestyles.”

The Presence Of Health And Safety Training Courses Online

Most governments make it mandatory for businesses, and organizations to conduct health and safety training for their employees. Undergoing the training makes it possible for employers, authorities, and their staff to implement safe practices in workplace and respond immediately and effectively if an accident or health hazard occurs. The training not only helps when occupational hazards or problems such as fire or earthquake hits but also assists in maintaining practices which would ensure safety in the work place or anywhere else.

The lessons taught in the health and safety training varies from course to course. The basic courses give training on basic safety and healthy practices and how to follow them. Other courses provide guidance on areas such as health and safety legislation, fire, first aid, food safety, manual handling etc which would range over all sectors of work. The fire training usually involves responding to fire alarms, using fire extinguishers and other means of extinguishing fire, training classes for fire marshals and fire wardens and information on the methods which would help prevent fire.

First aid courses in health and safety traininginclude recognizing and providing primary care for sudden illness and injuries so as to maintain the person stable till medical personnel arrives on the scene. It would also include performing CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) on adults. Other courses include emergency evacuation, hazard communication, management of hazardous waste, laboratory safety, electrical safety, tool safety, bio safety etc. Depending up on your occupation and needs you can apply for the courses, though basic health and safety training(which provides guidance on healthy practices, practicing safety etc) would be mandatory for all employees.

You could find many health and safety training courses online. The applicability of these courses would depend on your own requirement as well as what you already know. For example many centers offer courses such as alarm response, bio safety, office orientation, electrical safety, earthquake safety emergency procedures, refresher courses etc online. These may include learning materials which do not require practical training (unlike classes such as first aid, fire warden, and material handling). Some of these courses may require prior training. The requirements vary from course to course.

Gastric bypass surgery performed by remote control

Sunday, August 21, 2005

A robotic system at Stanford Medical Center was used to perform a laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery successfully with a theoretically similar rate of complications to that seen in standard operations. However, as there were only 10 people in the experimental group (and another 10 in the control group), this is not a statistically significant sample.

If this surgical procedure is as successful in large-scale studies, it may lead the way for the use of robotic surgery in even more delicate procedures, such as heart surgery. Note that this is not a fully automated system, as a human doctor controls the operation via remote control. Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is a treatment for obesity.

There were concerns that doctors, in the future, might only be trained in the remote control procedure. Ronald G. Latimer, M.D., of Santa Barbara, CA, warned “The fact that surgeons may have to open the patient or might actually need to revert to standard laparoscopic techniques demands that this basic training be a requirement before a robot is purchased. Robots do malfunction, so a backup system is imperative. We should not be seduced to buy this instrument to train surgeons if they are not able to do the primary operations themselves.”

There are precedents for just such a problem occurring. A previous “new technology”, the electrocardiogram (ECG), has lead to a lack of basic education on the older technology, the stethoscope. As a result, many heart conditions now go undiagnosed, especially in children and others who rarely undergo an ECG procedure.

Ex-US soldier sentenced to life in prison for Iraqi teen rape, four murders

Saturday, September 5, 2009

A former US soldier has been sentenced to life in prison for raping a teen and murdering her and her family while on active duty in Iraq. The jury failed to reach the unanimous verdict required for the death penalty sought by the prosecution.

[…] if I had never gone to Iraq I would never have got caught up in anything like this

According to testimony given by two soldiers, Steven Dale Green was part of a group who decided they wanted to rape a girl they had seen walking through her village, 14-year-old Abeer Qassim al-Janabi. They walked to her house while disguised as insurgents and separated her from her parents and younger sister.

Green then shot dead Abeer’s family while two other soldiers raped the girl. He then raped her himself while she wept before covering her face with a pillow and fatally shooting her. The gang then covered her naked body with a blanket soaked in kerosene, using a lighter to start a fire before walking 200 yards to a nearby checkpoint where they cooked a meal.

Green had already been discharged from the army when his crimes were discovered. He had previously spoken of a desire to murder Iraqi civilians and his defence argued he should never have been allowed to return to duty. A nurse had decided he would not carry out his desires. A US civilian court tried him, the first such prosecution of a soldier under a law allowing servicemen to be charged with crimes carried out abroad.

The judge described his actions as “unimaginable, unjustified and inexcusable” and sentenced him to five consecutive life sentences without possibility of parole. Four others had already been sentenced. Three are all serving life with parole after ten years, and a fourth who acted as a lookout is serving a 27-month sentence.

It took months for the offences to be discovered, even though Green had quickly confessed to a sergeant. Soldiers speaking to stress counsellors talked of the crimes after the abduction and murders of two other soldiers. When news of the soldiers’ actions broke, insurgents killed several American servicemen in revenge.

The prosecution described Green as “criminal and perverse” while the defence called him a “broken warrior.” Green said he was acting upon orders from former Specialist Paul Cortez, another of the attackers, and told the court “Y’all can act like I’m a psychopath or a sexual predator or whatever. But if I had never gone to Iraq I would never have got caught up in anything like this.”

The Benefit Of Inspections By Commercial Plumbers In Vermont Prior To Sales

byAlma Abell

When the plan is to purchase a commercial building for use as an investment or to house a business, it makes sense for the buyer to know all there is to know about that property. This includes understanding the current condition of the plumbing system. By choosing to hire one of the Commercial Plumbers in Vermont to inspect that plumbing it advance, it is possible to ensure that everything is in proper working order.

During the Inspection As part of the inspection process, any of the Commercial Plumbers in Vermont will look at every facet of the system. Along with taking a look at the pipes and making sure they are sound, the plumber will also want to look closely at all fixtures connected to that system. This includes the condition of faucets, valves, and drains. The goal is to determine if there is anything that may need replacing in the next couple of years, or if everything is in relatively decent shape. Providing a Detailed Report The plumber will provide written details related to the outcome of the inspection. If there is a fair amount of work that needs to be done to the plumbing, that detail can be used as a bargaining chip to negotiate a lower purchase price.

If the work is truly extensive and likely to cost a great deal of money, the buyer may decide that letting the deal go and moving on to other prospective properties is the best thing to do. Taking Care of the Necessary Repairs Assuming that the buyer and seller can come to an agreement, the plumber can move forward with making the necessary repairs. Part of the deal will be determining who is responsible for paying the plumber for the services rendered. If the seller agrees to pay for the repairs as a condition of the sale, then he or she will make payment arrangements with the plumbing professional.

If the buyer locks in a lower purchase price in exchange for agreeing to pay for the repairs, then that individual will work with the plumber to get the job done. For any buyer or seller who needs a complete plumbing inspection for a piece of commercial property, contact the professionals at . The inspection will be done in no time, and the two parties can use the information to negotiate the terms of the sale.
