Cleveland, Ohio clinic performs US’s first face transplant

Thursday, December 18, 2008

A team of eight transplant surgeons in Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, USA, led by reconstructive surgeon Dr. Maria Siemionow, age 58, have successfully performed the first almost total face transplant in the US, and the fourth globally, on a woman so horribly disfigured due to trauma, that cost her an eye. Two weeks ago Dr. Siemionow, in a 23-hour marathon surgery, replaced 80 percent of her face, by transplanting or grafting bone, nerve, blood vessels, muscles and skin harvested from a female donor’s cadaver.

The Clinic surgeons, in Wednesday’s news conference, described the details of the transplant but upon request, the team did not publish her name, age and cause of injury nor the donor’s identity. The patient’s family desired the reason for her transplant to remain confidential. The Los Angeles Times reported that the patient “had no upper jaw, nose, cheeks or lower eyelids and was unable to eat, talk, smile, smell or breathe on her own.” The clinic’s dermatology and plastic surgery chair, Francis Papay, described the nine hours phase of the procedure: “We transferred the skin, all the facial muscles in the upper face and mid-face, the upper lip, all of the nose, most of the sinuses around the nose, the upper jaw including the teeth, the facial nerve.” Thereafter, another team spent three hours sewing the woman’s blood vessels to that of the donor’s face to restore blood circulation, making the graft a success.

The New York Times reported that “three partial face transplants have been performed since 2005, two in France and one in China, all using facial tissue from a dead donor with permission from their families.” “Only the forehead, upper eyelids, lower lip, lower teeth and jaw are hers, the rest of her face comes from a cadaver; she could not eat on her own or breathe without a hole in her windpipe. About 77 square inches of tissue were transplanted from the donor,” it further described the details of the medical marvel. The patient, however, must take lifetime immunosuppressive drugs, also called antirejection drugs, which do not guarantee success. The transplant team said that in case of failure, it would replace the part with a skin graft taken from her own body.

Dr. Bohdan Pomahac, a Brigham and Women’s Hospital surgeon praised the recent medical development. “There are patients who can benefit tremendously from this. It’s great that it happened,” he said.

Leading bioethicist Arthur Caplan of the University of Pennsylvania withheld judgment on the Cleveland transplant amid grave concerns on the post-operation results. “The biggest ethical problem is dealing with failure — if your face rejects. It would be a living hell. If your face is falling off and you can’t eat and you can’t breathe and you’re suffering in a terrible manner that can’t be reversed, you need to put on the table assistance in dying. There are patients who can benefit tremendously from this. It’s great that it happened,” he said.

Dr Alex Clarke, of the Royal Free Hospital had praised the Clinic for its contribution to medicine. “It is a real step forward for people who have severe disfigurement and this operation has been done by a team who have really prepared and worked towards this for a number of years. These transplants have proven that the technical difficulties can be overcome and psychologically the patients are doing well. They have all have reacted positively and have begun to do things they were not able to before. All the things people thought were barriers to this kind of operations have been overcome,” she said.

The first partial face transplant surgery on a living human was performed on Isabelle Dinoire on November 27 2005, when she was 38, by Professor Bernard Devauchelle, assisted by Professor Jean-Michel Dubernard in Amiens, France. Her Labrador dog mauled her in May 2005. A triangle of face tissue including the nose and mouth was taken from a brain-dead female donor and grafted onto the patient. Scientists elsewhere have performed scalp and ear transplants. However, the claim is the first for a mouth and nose transplant. Experts say the mouth and nose are the most difficult parts of the face to transplant.

In 2004, the same Cleveland Clinic, became the first institution to approve this surgery and test it on cadavers. In October 2006, surgeon Peter Butler at London‘s Royal Free Hospital in the UK was given permission by the NHS ethics board to carry out a full face transplant. His team will select four adult patients (children cannot be selected due to concerns over consent), with operations being carried out at six month intervals. In March 2008, the treatment of 30-year-old neurofibromatosis victim Pascal Coler of France ended after having received what his doctors call the worlds first successful full face transplant.

Ethical concerns, psychological impact, problems relating to immunosuppression and consequences of technical failure have prevented teams from performing face transplant operations in the past, even though it has been technically possible to carry out such procedures for years.

Mr Iain Hutchison, of Barts and the London Hospital, warned of several problems with face transplants, such as blood vessels in the donated tissue clotting and immunosuppressants failing or increasing the patient’s risk of cancer. He also pointed out ethical issues with the fact that the procedure requires a “beating heart donor”. The transplant is carried out while the donor is brain dead, but still alive by use of a ventilator.

According to Stephen Wigmore, chair of British Transplantation Society’s ethics committee, it is unknown to what extent facial expressions will function in the long term. He said that it is not certain whether a patient could be left worse off in the case of a face transplant failing.

Mr Michael Earley, a member of the Royal College of Surgeon‘s facial transplantation working party, commented that if successful, the transplant would be “a major breakthrough in facial reconstruction” and “a major step forward for the facially disfigured.”

In Wednesday’s conference, Siemionow said “we know that there are so many patients there in their homes where they are hiding from society because they are afraid to walk to the grocery stores, they are afraid to go the the street.” “Our patient was called names and was humiliated. We very much hope that for this very special group of patients there is a hope that someday they will be able to go comfortably from their houses and enjoy the things we take for granted,” she added.

In response to the medical breakthrough, a British medical group led by Royal Free Hospital’s lead surgeon Dr Peter Butler, said they will finish the world’s first full face transplant within a year. “We hope to make an announcement about a full-face operation in the next 12 months. This latest operation shows how facial transplantation can help a particular group of the most severely facially injured people. These are people who would otherwise live a terrible twilight life, shut away from public gaze,” he said.

Cosmetic And Reconstructive Surgery And How You Can Differentiate One From The Other

Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgery and How You Can Differentiate One from the Other

by

Katie Hallison

At present, plastic surgery is becoming more and more preferred. Long ago, only the rich and famous can afford the simplest plastic surgery treatment. Currently, it is conveniently offered to the public–not to mention that it\’s affordable.

Plastic surgeries are carried out by plastic surgeons to enhance the appearance of a particular body part. Plastic surgery can improve your look and offer emotional and psychological perks too. People who have had plastic surgery report obtaining higher self-esteem and more assurance to go after their life objectives. Plastic surgery procedures such as liposuction, breast augmentation, or cleft lip surgery have greatly served millions of individuals to achieve just that.

In spite of the many perks, as with all surgical procedures, there is always a danger associated with plastic surgery. It is very important that you are completely aware of all the potential dangers and side effects that a specific procedure might cause you. Reviewing the entire treatment and finding out about proper post-surgery care from your doctor will definitely help you decrease the chances of complications from taking place in the future.

The Two Branches of Plastic Surgery. Plastic surgery has two main branches. These are cosmetic surgery and reconstructive surgery. Reconstructive surgery is performed to rectify any physical deformity that might be created by birth defects, infection, developmental abnormalities, illnesses, tumors, or trauma. Reconstructive surgery aims to enhance both appearance and function. Cosmetic surgery is more concerned with appearance. Examples of reconstructive surgery treatments are cleft lip and palate repair, breast reconstruction, scar revision, and skin grafting, while arm lifts, tummy tucks, BOTOX, and breast enhancement are some of the treatments that are commonly done by a

Reconstructive surgery is generally covered in most health insurance plans though coverage for certain treatments may vary considerably with each insurance company. The same cannot be concluded about cosmetic surgery though. Usually,

Tampa plastic surgery

patients won\’t be able to get insurance coverage because the cause of the treatment does not pose any immediate health dangers. Nonetheless, some insurance providers may present you coverage for cosmetic surgery if you can establish that your appearance is your primary source of income as with TV and film stars.

California teamsters picket Orange County transit system in contract dispute

Sunday, July 8, 2007

In an ongoing labor dispute from May of this year in California, United States, Teamsters Local 952, which represents the Orange County Transportation Authority‘s 1,200 coach operators, went on strike at 12:35 a.m. (0035 hrs) PDT Saturday morning after a cooling-off period declared by State Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger expired.

Sanctioned picket lines have been formed outside Authority facilities in Garden Grove, Anaheim, and Santa Ana. About 200,000 regular passengers are affected.

Major sticking points in the negotiation appear to be related to cost-of-living increases and pension funding allocations. The strike was declared after the Authority’s bargaining agent said he lacked authority to approve a union counter proposal, which he said had to be taken before the OCTA’s board of directors, who will not be available to meet until Monday the 9th at the earliest.

Futuristic Technology With Google Glass}

Submitted by: Rachel Foletta

Since its launch, Google Glass has been a prominent topic of discussion in the developer community. The product has certainly revolutionized the modern generation and people across the globe are getting more and more curious. Currently, Google glass ownership is restricted to American Citizens and passport holders but at the core, the Google Glass hardware is only as good as the app it supports. This is also the reason why Google Glass Applications Development has hit great popularity among global developers.

Point to note!

Well, the Google Glass hardware is certainly an innovative and futuristic concept? But are the apps used in the device compatible with the expectations of the users? While there isnt a touchstone to compare the technology, Google Glassware is vastly different from the regular apps we are conversant with smart phone technology. This is a typical product prominent and elaborate and unique experience. As such, not all developers make it to the coveted platform.

Trending Glassware

For the curious, Google Glassware can be of many kinds in several niches. As such, an app is the usual software coding that helps / facilitates specialized functioning or interaction. Google Glass supports a wide variety of apps including those in social media, utility, entertainment and business categories. Whatever might be your idea behind an app, the only thing you need to ensure is quality and functionality. Hire Google Glass developers who have a deep understanding in how the app would be able to interact with the hardware and present an innovative solution to the end user. The purpose might be utilitarian or entertainment. It certainly becomes easier coding and designing, once the developer is able to foresee the results.

Another important aspect of churning out a Great Google Glass Application is researching and knowing the customer needs. Users wouldnt like to play Tetris on their eyewear. Rather, the technology is more meant for navigation, mapping and helping find out information about unknown tangible things. While, several apps have already been submitted for the Google Glass platform, only a few are downloaded. These are also the apps that have been able to keep it simple, straightforward, user friendly and uniquely functional.

Goal of Google Glass technology

To put it straight, Google Glass is simply a high performing computer that can be worn as an eyewear. While it looks highly trendy, the technology also demands a high price for the product. As such, you cannot expect users to buy a Google Glass to do things that would have also been possible with a lower priced smart phone. Glassware technology inspires a specific market segment and people are willing to pay the price to gain advantages of the high end technological integrations. It can be regarded both as a luxury and a requirement of the modern day living. The moment Google introduced the technology; it has been making new and subsequent additions to the offerings have made the device completely futuristic. Entrepreneurs who want to take their business to a whole different level, Google Glassware might be an exceptional possibility. Hire Google Glass developers who would be able to help realize the goals you have in mind.

About the Author: Rachel Foletta has been a thorough follower of new world technologies. A developer herself, she has been contributing several articles and critic regarding Google Glass Application Development since the technology was launched.More Info :

South Australia enters week-long lockdown to contain COVID-19 Delta variant spread

Friday, July 23, 2021

With five active cases of the Delta variant of COVID-19, South Australia begun a one-week lockdown on Monday. Announcing the lockdown, state Premier Steven Marshall declared “we have no alternative but to impose some fairly heavy and immediate restrictions”.

The first case out of South Australia’s active cases was presented to Modbury Hospital on Sunday night, having returned from Argentina earlier this month. The fifth, which Premier Marshall noted as “far more worrying”, visited The Greek on Halifax restaurant at the same time as someone who was later confirmed to be carrying the virus. Chief Public Health Officer for the state Nicola Spurrier said “if anyone has been at The Greek on Halifax they need to get into quarantine and get tested”.

In accordance with new regulations, there are only five reasons for South Australians to leave home: essential work, shopping for essential goods such as food, exercise, but only with people from the same household and within 2.5 kilometers (2 mi) of home, medical reasons (which includes testing and vaccination against the coronavirus, but excludes elective and cosmetic surgery), and caregiving.

Schools have closed for all but children of essential workers, with online learning having begun on Thursday. Face masks are also be mandated for those who leave home. ABC News reported that “support for businesses is expected to be announced…”, with all non-essential retail required to close under the new regulations.

Facebook acquires Instagram for US$1 billion

Thursday, April 12, 2012

The popular social networking site Facebook agreed to purchase the Instagram photo-sharing mobile app for US$1 billion in cash and stock Monday.

The app, which can be used to apply faux-vintage filters to photographs, allows users to share photos with one another both directly and through posts to social networking sites. Instagram was founded less than two years ago by two Stanford University graduates near San Francisco, California and the purchase is one of the largest acquisitions in Facebook history following after a failed takeover bid in early 2011 which had been declined by Instagram.

Facebook, despite its prominence as the largest website for social networking in the world, has had difficulties expanding into the mobile market, particularly the realm of mobile advertising. As of yet, Facebook lacks an advertising platform for its apps and has yet to capitalize off the boom in mobile phone use that Instagram is intertwined with.

We think the fact that Instagram is connected to other services beyond Facebook is an important part of the experience.

Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg noted the importance of the ability to post to multiple social media sites at once in a post. He wrote on his personal timeline, “We think the fact that Instagram is connected to other services beyond Facebook is an important part of the experience.” He said Facebook “plan[s] on keeping features like the ability to post to other social networks, the ability to not share your Instagrams on Facebook if you want, and the ability to have followers and follow people separately from your friends on Facebook.”

Many other small services that Facebook has acquired, namely Gowalla, Hot Potato, and FriendFeed, were all shuttered shortly after acquisition. The co-founder of Instagram, Kevin Systrom, in a company blog post, has denied any claims that Instagram would share the fate of these past services. “It’s important to be clear that Instagram is not going away. We’ll be working with Facebook to evolve Instagram and build the network. We’ll continue to add new features to the product and find new ways to create a better mobile photos experience,” he wrote.

Many reasons have been put forth for the purchase, and Zuckerberg commented, “for years, we’ve focused on building the best experience for sharing photos with your friends and family. Now, we’ll be able to work even more closely with the Instagram team to also offer the best experiences for sharing beautiful mobile photos with people based on your interests.”

Man charged with assaulting British singer Leona Lewis

Friday, October 16, 2009

A man has been arrested and charged after the assault of British singer Leona Lewis, which occurred on Wednesday. The attacker turned out to be 29-year-old Peter Kowalczyk, who suffers from a health condition called anaemia, which causes a reduction from the normal number of red blood cells. The condition also causes a decrease in oxygen-binding ability. His parents said that it “affects his state of mind”. He had also been suffering from a series of psychological problems, of which he was getting music therapy for from the National Health Service (NHS).

It was thought that he attacked Leona Lewis out of envy because she had won the third series of The X Factor UK, whereas he was turned down from the show, according to British tabloid The Sun. On Wednesday, Leona was signing copies of her autobiography “Dreams” for attending fans in a Waterstone’s book specialist store in the Piccadilly region of London, England. Kowalczyk was believed to be waiting for five hours to get an autobiography signing. When he did attack Lewis, he was immediately wrestled to the ground by security guards at the scene, while Leona was escorted away. The attack left a large bruise on her head.

Peter has been arrested and charged with assault. He was placed into a psychiatric hospital and sectioned under the Mental Health Act 2007 on Thursday. As a result of this incident, Leona Lewis has cancelled a trip to Germany, where she would have signed more copies of her autobiography. The 24-year-old singer is now being cared for in her East London home by Jo and Maria, her parents, and is also being comforted by Lou Al-Chaama, her boyfriend. It has been reported that Kowalczyk is due to appear in a court in late October 2009.

Adding A Kitchen Island By Removing A Wall

By Angela Glancy

Many times a small, cramped kitchen can be made spacious and modern by removing a wall and adding a kitchen island. This is especially true in older homes that have a small dining room adjacent to the kitchen. The wall between the two rooms may make both spaces feel small ,and the path from the kitchen to the dining room may not be efficient or convenient.

Opening up the space between the two rooms can be like a breath of fresh air, making the two spaces into one big space that is more useful, efficient and contemporary. Adding a kitchen island where the wall once stood is frequently chosen as a way to add seating, storage, counter and even cooking space. If you are considering this type of renovation for your kitchen, here are some things you should consider before you tear down that wall.

Structural Considerations

Removing a wall is a major undertaking, and if the wall happens to be a load-bearing one, it will be necessary to make other structural reinforcements to compensate for the loss of the wall. Failure to do this could destroy the structural integrity of the home. Unless you are a licensed builder or contractor who understands the structural implications of what you are doing, your best bet is to hire a competent contractor to remove the wall and build the necessary reinforcements. The expense for this service is well worth it to avoid dangerous and expensive errors that could occur by trying to do the job yourself.

A contractor will also have the expertise and resources to move light fixtures, electrical outlets, plumbing lines, and so on, if that is needed for your remodel. This is especially helpful if you plan to add a sink or cook top to the island. The services of a professional kitchen designer can also help you create an efficient and attractive layout; many DIY homeowners don’t have the expertise to visualize the remodel and plan for proper traffic flow and placement of appliances, etc. in the kitchen. If new cabinetry is part of your renovation, the kitchen shop or home improvement store where you purchase your cabinets will usually offer this service for free.

Options for the Kitchen Island

There are many possibilities for designing a kitchen island and the design you choose depends on your needs. If you are seeking more storage space, for example, shallower upper cabinets are a great option to use below the countertop of the island because they are shallow and can be placed back to back, offering storage on both sides. Or, you can finish the front side with laminate or beaded board and set a countertop with a deep overhang on top: This will provide enough space for a breakfast bar on one side and storage on the other.

You can also choose to hang upper cabinets above the island for storage. Setting the cabinets back to back doubles the storage space; or opt for deeper cabinets with glass doors on both sides to maintain an open feeling while still adding storage.

Another option, as mentioned above, is to add a cooktop or sink to the island. Depending on the layout of the kitchen, a cooktop in the island in lieu of your existing range, might greatly enhance the efficiency of the room. An extra sink, dishwasher, cooling drawers, trash compactor or cabinets with roll out drawers are other bells and whistles that are nice to have when space and budget allow.
