Canadian government settles lawsuit over children ‘scooped’ out of indigenous communities

Saturday, October 7, 2017

The Canadian federal government of Justin Trudeau yesterday responded to a group of lawsuits by agreeing to pay C$750 million to the survivors of the “Sixties Scoop” program, in which 20,000 First Nations children were removed from their parents’ households and placed with non-indigenous foster or adoptive parents. The plaintiffs claimed that this caused them mental and emotional problems, in addition to the loss of their ancestral culture. Carolyn Bennett, Canada’s Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister, announced the agreement.

“I have great hope that because we’ve reached this plateau, this will never, ever happen in Canada again,” Marcia Brown Martel, now Chief of the Beaverhouse First Nation, said of the decision. Martel was removed from her home as many as ten times before 1972. She and her sister were among the original plaintiffs. From the 1960s to 1980s, some of the children were sent out of the country to the United States, Europe or New Zealand. Some of the plaintiffs say they were abused by their foster families and others do not. A separate settlement has been offered to the 150,000 children who were instead sent to institutions, such as boarding schools.

“There is also no dispute about the fact that great harm was done,” wrote Ontario Supreme Court Justice Edward P. Belobaba in a preliminary decision in February. “The ‘scooped’ children lost contact with their families. They lost their aboriginal language, culture and identity. Neither the children nor their foster or adoptive parents were given information about the children’s aboriginal heritage or about the various educational and other benefits that they were entitled to receive. The removed children vanished ‘with scarcely a trace.’?” He did concede that the founders of the program meant well, but major sources agree it was subject to considerable culture clash, with social workers removing children from situations that were later found not to be abusive or neglectful.

According to a lawyer for some of the plaintiffs, Jeffrey Wilson, this is the first time anyone has argued that the loss of a cultural identity in a lawsuit in a Western country: “No First Nations case yet to this day has asked the question as to whether or not the loss of identity is an actionable wrong. Aboriginal title to property has been litigated, aboriginal title to identity has not,” he told the The Guardian.

The First Nations people make up approximately four percent of Canada’s population, at about 1.4 million people, and they suffer disproportionately from poverty, violence, addiction and crime.

Canada is not the only country where native children were taken away from their families. From 1910 to 1970, the Australian government collected Aboriginal children, who came to be called the Stolen Generations, and relocated them to schools and other institutions far from their communities. In 1978, the United States passed the Indian Child Welfare Act to curtail similar actions toward Native American children.

Manitoba was the first of Canada’s provinces to apologize for the scoop program, in 2015. The federal government has also announced plans to make a public apology.

What Types Of Services Does A Property Management Company Provide?

byphineasgray

A property management company is a third party in the landlord/tenant relationship dynamic. They’re often hired to handle the day to day routine of real estate investments. But what does that entail, exactly? If you’re a landlord looking for a property management company in Salinas CA, you may be wondering what services this company is going to provide. Will you be sharing any responsibilities, or will your work be separate? The answers to this are as follows.

#1. Handling tenantsTaking care of tenants and seeing to their problems is tricky business. At worst, you can come off as someone telling someone else who is paying you to live on your land how to live their lives. Obviously, not an image anyone with a degree of niceness to their character wants to invoke. However, a property manager knows exactly how to handle tenants. The services they provide for tenants include taking over screenings so they can discern whether they should be allowed on the property in the first place, marketing the property in all the right places to make sure the tenants bite in the first place, and handling any complaints the tenants might have.

#2. MaintenanceProperty managers take up all responsibility for the property’s physical condition. This is good because not every landlord is also a handyman, and property managers have access to more resources to fix any problem the house may face. This includes broken machinery, electrical issues, exterminations, and any and all preventative measures towards all of the above.

#3. RepairsA property manager’s duty is to also repair any damage to the structure or household, or hire someone to do it if they are unable to. Any worthwhile property management company has a large web of contacts, from plumbers, to engineers, and carpenters among many others.

#4. SupervisingAny landlord loves having an extra set of eyes watching the property, and property managers are experts at it. They take over keeping an eye on the tenants and other employees when the landlord is busy or otherwise indisposed. They also oversee any other vacant properties the landlord assigns them to, to make sure they’re kept in top condition until they’re filled.

If you’re an overworked landlord who can’t be in three places at once, a property manager is a dream come true for you. They’re specialists in aspects of owning land that you may not be, and can do the jobs that you may not have time for. So don’t wait another minute, look up your nearest property management office and work something out.

Patents Drafted by Qualified IP Lawyers Will Protect Your Invention

by

Tim Bishop

People who are tring to steal your business idea can infringe a patent in several ways. However, if you have your patent drafted by specialist IP lawyers, you are more likely to be able to defend against this theft successfully.

If you invent or develop a new service, concept or product6, it is vitally important to take steps to protect it. You also cannot over-estimate the value of contacting a professionally qualified IP Lawyer for intellectual property advice – the money you spend now will be repaid several-fold.

Adequate protection will ensure that you can exploit the financial opened up by your development, and prevent others piggybacking on your success. It may be that patenting is the best of several ways to protect the ideas you have developed, and a properly registered patent provides you with protection against several forms of infringement.

One way in which a patent can be infringed is by deliberate copying, or by developing something that is an extremely close approximation of the patented product. If the latter, it could be that the copying company has been advised that the original patent is not sufficiently strong to mount a strong defence in court, in other words that it was not well drafted.

If the situation is one where several features of the product have been copied, then there is a strong argument for infringement, and so the matter may well be settled over a discussion about whether the patent claims themselves are valid. Alternatively, there may be an attempt cover up the evidence of infringement, despite there being a close copy; this can often happen where some material concerning the patent is disclosed in the course of business negotiations. In particular, if a patented product or process has obvious commercial benefits, then it will be in the commercial interest of less than scrupulous business people to work around the patent and develop something similar that achieves the same end. This area in particular gives rise to the most litigation, as expert IP Lawyers argue about whether there is an infringement or not.

Finally, there is a situation that sometimes arises, of accidental infringement. The old adage of “there’s no such thing as an original idea” may come into play here, as many people with a newly patented product will naturally start looking out in their market sector, to see whether there is any rival product that could be claimed to be infringing on their patented product, service or method. If the method that has been patented provides a solution to a common problem – and tapping a lucrative market sector – then it is all the more likely that more than one company is working on the same problem at the same time; and their results could have used the same chemistry of physics. And while the solution may look very similar, it is always possible that it was reached by a very different route.

Explosives pass security checks in Slovakia, arrive in Ireland in failed test

Wednesday, January 6, 2010

A failed test of security at Slovakia’s Poprad airport resulted in a 49 year-old man unknowingly carrying plastic explosives from Slovakia to Dublin, Ireland. The explosives were concealed so well that the man did not find them when he unpacked his bag at his apartment.

On Saturday, Slovak authorities planted contraband in passengers’ luggage at Poprad’s Poprad-Tatry Airport without the knowledge of passengers. Seven of the eight items were recovered, while an eighth made its way to an apartment in Dublin. Slovak authorities realised on Tuesday that one package of explosives were missing and notified Irish authorities who searched the man’s apartment.

During the search, parts of Dublin’s inner-suburbs were sealed off and evacuated causing disruption to residents and businesses. At the apartment authorities found the package and arrested the man under anti-terrorism laws; he was later released without charge after it was established he was innocent.

The man, a Slovakian electrician had been living in Ireland for some time. He was holidaying in Slovakia over Christmas.

Ireland’s Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform issued a statement saying, “Following contact earlier today from the Slovakian authorities with the Airport Police at Dublin Airport, members of the Garda Síochána have recovered a small quantity of explosive material from the luggage of a passenger who had flown into Dublin from that country on Saturday last.”

The package contained 90 grams (3 ounces) of the plastic explosive RDX, also known as cyclonite or hexogen. According to Commandant Gavin Young, a spokesperson for the Irish Defense Forces, “On their own, this type of explosive does need to be combined with other elements to make it into a bomb, but obviously this type of high-grade explosive is potentially extremely dangerous.”

Slovakia’s Minister for the Interior Robert Kalinak has apologized to Irish Justice Minister Dermot Ahern over the incident and expressed his “profound regret”. Irish authorities are now investigating the incident and the government has ordered for a full report to be delivered.

The Irish Opposition has expressed concern about the incident. Labour Party spokesman Joe Costello said “This incident led to the closure of roads in the area, the evacuation of businesses and the lives and safety of residents could have been put at risk. We also need to know what protest the government is going to make about this breach of our security.”

KKE: Interview with the Greek Communist Party

Thursday, May 13, 2010

Wikinews reporter Iain Macdonald has performed an interview with Dr Isabella Margara, a London-based member of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE). In the interview Margara sets out the communist response to current events in Greece as well as discussing the viability of a communist economy for the nation. She also hit back at Petros Tzomakas, a member of another Greek far-left party which criticised KKE in a previous interview.

The interview comes amid tensions in cash-strapped Greece, where the government is introducing controversial austerity measures to try to ease the nation’s debt-problem. An international rescue package has been prepared by European Union member states and the International Monetary Fund – should Greece require a bailout; protests have been held against government attempts to manage the economic situation.

Jewelry Boxes A Guide To Jewelry Storage

More On This Topic:

By Linea Riffel

If you have been thinking about housing all of your jewelry in a convenient storage space, then you should consider getting a jewelry box that fits the needs of your collection. Jewelry boxes range in size from small leather travel wallets to large floor standing wooden boxes. This article give a survey of the various options open to you as you go about selecting a jewelry box that is right for you.

The most common and traditional form of jewelry storage is the wooden jewelry box. These boxes come in various sizes beginning with small dresser-top boxes and finishing with large floor standing wooden armoires. In between you can also find medium and large boxes that will fit on dresser tops.

The smallest wooden boxes are earring, cufflink, ring and pendant boxes that are as small as 2 1/4 x 2 1/4 x 1 3/4″ to hold individual items. If you have more jewelry, the a medium size dresser top box measuring at least 10 x 7 x 6 inches might be appropriate. Larger dresser top jewelry chests or floor standing armoires are the best options if you have an extensive and varied collection.

In the same way that you prize your jewelry pieces, you can also select a jewelry box which is itself a luxurious and beautiful item. Luxury jewelry chests are usually handcrafted and have striking wood finishes such as mahogany, teak, maple or burlwood.

Partially or fully handcrafted, luxury chests feature piano finishes, compass hinges and luxurious linings. High end jewelry boxes range in price from $200 to over $700.

Wood is not the only medium for jewelry boxes. Leather is a versatile material that is found in jewelry storage pieces in all sizes and styles such as leather travel wallets, jewelry rolls, portable train cases, safety deposit cases, watch storage boxes, dresser top boxes and even huge leather trunks.

Leather jewelry boxes come in a variety of colors such as black, tan, white, green blue, red and even pink.

The type of collection that you have may also be a factor in which jewelry box you select. If you have a lot of necklaces then you should take a look at necklace armoires.

There are dresser top mini armoires with compartments enabling you to hang the necklaces, and for larger collection you can select from either floor standing armoires or wall mounted mirrors.

All of these boxes have side doors specifically made for hanging necklaces tangle-free.

If your jewelry collection is varied, then you have to consider the specialized dividers that are features of many jewelry boxes. You can find boxes with compartments for fashion earrings or bars for pierced earrings, padded rolls or deep storage for bangle bracelets, hooks or horizontal lined sections for chain bracelets, padded ring rolls for rings, padded rolls or lined compartments for cufflinks, hooks for necklaces and removable padded watch pillows for watches. Not every jewelry box has all of these specialized compartments so think about what you really need and then pick a box that has the areas to fit your items.

Sometimes it is easy to find the box that you need. For example, if you are searching for a box to hold one or two special pieces or a box that will be part of a special present, then a trinket box is appropriate. These boxes are crafted from fine brass or pewter with hand enameled details. They sometimes have hand set Austrian crystals and 24k gold accents and make perfect keepsake gifts for the serious collector or someone special on your gift list.

Finally, if you really want to make an impression on someone then you can choose a wooden jewelry box that is specifically made for the presentation of a particular jewelry gift. You can find boxes for engagement rings, watches, earrings, pendants and necklaces.

So, consider what kind of jewelry storage you require, and then have some fun exploring the wide variety of jewelry boxes that are on the market today.

Steel major Arcelor ready to reconsider Mittal’s offer

Monday, May 22, 2006

Luxembourg’s largest steel company Arcelor is ready to study Mittal Steel‘s improved takeover offer, the former said on Sunday, opening the door to possible talks with Indian steel magnate Laxminivas Mittal. Arcelor Chairman Joseph Kinsch told reporters after a meeting of Arcelor’s board that the company’s directors would be ready to examine the details of Mittal’s latest offer once it has been approved by the CSSF (Luxembourg’s financial regulatory body).

Until Sunday, Arcelor, the world’s second-largest steel company, had firmly rejected world-leader Mittal’s bid to take the former company over and form a global steel giant. The softening of Arcelor’s stance comes after Mittal Steel raised its hostile cash-and-equity bid by a third on Friday and dropped a key demand for family control over the combined entity.

Media reports had suggested that Arcelor was trying to find another company to rescue it from being taken over by Mittal Steel. Possible candidates included Russian tycoon Vladimir Lisin and Russia’s Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works (MMK). Mittal’s move on Friday came after the value of its initial offer fell more than 10 percent behind the market worth of Arcelor, as the latter announced a buyback of its own shares at above-market prices to ward off Mittal Steel.

Laxminivas Mittal, who has hinted that the bitter takeover battle might have a hint of racism involved in it, told the French newspaper La Tribune that he was sure that the attractive nature of his revised offer would enable him to obtain over 50% of the Arcelor shares. He added that he was of the opinion that the involvement of a Russian third party would not be in the best interests of Arcelor’s shareholders.

Bomb blasts near Greek Minister’s house

Tuesday, May 30, 2006

A bomb exploded near the house of the Greek Culture Minister,Georgios Voulgarakis, in Lycabettus Hill, Athens, wrecking a number of cars.

The device, which the police said consisted of 2-3 kg (4-7lb) of dynamite, had been placed on a bike left between two cars.

The explosion at 7:42am (GMT +2), close to the home of Minister Voulgarakis, is the second time the former Minister for Public Order has been the target of a bomb attack.

While the perpertrators are not yet known, Giorgos Voulgarakis, who had been receiving death threats, is unpopular with leftist parties over questions of immigration.

A trained dog of a Greek anti-terrorist unit had been sniffing around the area of the Minister’s home each morning. The September 2003 attack nearly burned down his house.

Two primary schools and a kindergarten nearby were slightly damaged but there were no reported injuries.

As bomb technicians searched the school grounds, frantic parents rushed to take their children home.

The leftist “Epanastatikos Laekos Agonas”(Revolutionary popular rally), is the group which some Greek media have accused for today’s bomb attack. No official claim of responsibility has yet been made and the police investigation continues.

All the Greek parties, including the major opposition party, PASOK; the Communist Party (KKE), Synaspismos and LAOS parties, have strongly condemned the terrorist attack.

More On This Topic:

byAlma Abell

For many years, smoking has been linked to cancer and other health problems. The fact that the contents in tobacco are addictive makes quitting smoking a difficult task to most smokers. The good news is that electronic cigarettes promise to be the future of safe smoking and are an easy way of quitting the smoking habit. Just like ordinary cigarettes, e-cigarettes offer all that a smoker would want, but the only difference is that the Vaporium contain tobacco, produce no smoke, give maximum satisfaction, and do not leave behind any tar.

For the first time in the history of tobacco industry, a popular alternative to tobacco cigarettes hit the market with a bang leaving the once giant tobacco manufactures mouths agape. Besides using technology, e-cigs are beneficial to the users in virtually all respects.

Designed to provide an alternative that is healthy and safe, e-cigs are quickly becoming a new way of life and a solution to the global cancer problem that threatens to tear down the lives of millions of people. Additional benefits of these cigarettes include no bad odor, no smoker’s breadth, does not stain the teeth and don not have restrictions on where to smoke.
