The leaders of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) met in Guadalajara, Mexico on Sunday and Monday. The leaders of the three countries (Barack Obama of the United States, Felipe Calderón of Mexico, and Stephen Harper of Canada) promised to work together on swine flu, organised crime and green issues.

Despite disputes in a number of areas remaining unresolved, the three leaders succeeded in presenting an amiable Three Amigos image. The three leaders expressed solidarity, and an understanding of each others position.

The unresolved issues include the buy American clauses in the US stimulus package, tit for tat reprisals by the Mexican authorities over Canadian visa restrictions on Mexican travellers, and the US ban on Mexican trucks from crossing the border.

Risking the ire of human rights activists back home President Obama expressed support for President Calderón’s war against drugs saying he had “great confidence” in the Mexican authorities.

Mexican Federal Police (Policía Federal) have foiled an alleged plot to assasinate the President of Mexico Felipe Calderón. Acting on intelligence gathered over a year the Federal Police arrested five drug cartel members on Sunday and publicly paraded their captives and a number of weapons ,including automatic rifles, on Monday. Speaking during a summit of North American leaders Calderón played down the threats on his life, saying that the cartels are being destroyed by his policies.

Some 11000 have died since President Calderón’s took office in 2006 and made the war on drugs a cornerstone of his administration.

Aung San Suu Kyi has been sentenced by a court in Burma to a further three years of house arrest for violating the terms of her previous sentence. However her sentence was immediately commuted to 18 months on the orders of Burmese head of state Senior-General Than Shwe out of respect for her father General Aung San and out of a desire for “national reconciliation”.

The period of her arrest will prevent Aung San Suu Kyi from participating in the general elections scheduled for 2010. The sentence was immediately condemned by Western leaders, and breaking from their usual silence, the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) through its current chair Thailand issued a statement expressing disappointment. The ASEAN statement and talk of further European Union and United States sanctions are unlikely to have any impact on Southeast Asian country given the support of India and China.

The Chinese issued a statement calling for the world to respect Burmese sovereignty and laws, and is seen as an indication that China, a veto power will not support any United Nations actions.

John Yettaw whose unauthorised visit led to Aung San Suu Kyi’s prosecution has himself been sentenced to seven years imprisonment, four of which will be for hard labour.

Four employees of the Rio Tinto Group have been formally arrested in China on charges of bribery and using improper practises in its negotiations with Chinese companies. The Chinese accuse the men of improperly learning the negotiating position of Chinese companies wishing to buy iron ore, and through this charging 700 billion yuan (US$102.46 billion) more then they would otherwise have been able to

The four were initially held on espionage charges and have been held since early July. The formal charges allows the Chinese authorities to hold the four a further seven months as it prepares its case against them. Their arrests followed the collapse of an attempted by Chinese owned Chinalco to raise its stake in the Anglo-Australian Rio Tinto Group to 18%.

Michael Jackson will be the star of a film to be released on October 28, some four months after his death. The film will be primarily cut from footage of Jackson rehearsing for the series of concerts that would have taken place at the O2 in London, but will also feature interviews with Jackson’s family and friends.

The film becomes possible after AEG Live, the promoter of the O2 concerts, reached an US$60 million agreement with Columbia Pictures for over 100 hours of footage of Jackson preparing for his swan song.

“He was the architect of ‘This is it‘, and we were his builders…” said Kenny Ortega, Jackson’s collaborator on the project “…it was clear that he was on his way to another theatrical triumph.”

Is Hardwood Flooring In Reno, Nv A Good Idea For That Climate?

byAlma Abell

To my mind, there are only two types of flooring; those that are covered by carpets and those that are not. Generally speaking; the carpeted option could appear the most logical for rooms situated in a cool (or cold) climate. However, how many of us, these days, let the climate outside decide what the climate will be indoors – why else would we have heating and air conditioning if not to control the indoor climate to our liking?

Reno’s climate is generally on the warm side; the record highest temperature recorded is 108° F with a 12 month average high of 67.5 ° F (the record low is a chilly -17 ° F; but, the average low is somewhat warmer at 40 ° F). Definitely, the foot cooling effects of carpetless flooring have an attraction during those warmer months; usually May to October and, apart maybe from a record winter; your central heating should be able to override any desire for something warmer underfoot.

Visual Impact Or Underfoot Tactile Experience?

Which counts for more when selecting a flooring? (Forget about office, commercial establishments and factories where the floor will be chosen on functional and purely economical grounds; let’s concentrate on the more pleasurable flooring that we put into our homes in Reno).

Just to be clear; a room has a built in floor which might be a concrete slab, wooden floorboards or simple wood sheeting. Once the builder has got that far; something more attractive will be put on top; this could be carpeting or some other form of covering; or it could be a flooring in its own right – such as marble; or ceramic tiles; or it could be hardwood flooring for Reno, NV.

Personal tastes and budget usually decide what goes down on our floors; even in functional places like kitchens and bathrooms. However, given the climate; my personal preference would be for hardwood flooring; I get pleasure from looking at good quality wood and the type and/or color of the wood can be chosen to fit in with both my furniture and however I have decorated the walls and ceiling. It has to be hardwood flooring because things, like chairs, do get scraped across floors and “things” do get split – hardwood, particularly if it has been treated, has good resistance to wear and tear. However, my main reason for choosing hardwood flooring in Reno, NV is that I love the feeling of it under my bare feet (and I usually go barefoot at home).

American pitchman Billy Mays dies at age 50

Sunday, June 28, 2009

American pitchman and advertiser Billy Mays has died at the age of 50. Mays was probably most known for his pitching of the multipurpose cleaning product OxiClean.

According to reports, Mays’ wife, Deborah, found him unresponsive Sunday morning in their home located in Tampa, Florida. Fire-rescue crews pronounced him dead at 7:45am EDT. The cause of death was heart disease.

According to reports, he was a passenger on U.S. Airways Flight 1241, a flight to Tampa from Philadelphia, that suffered a tire blowout upon landing on Saturday night. He was quoted as saying objects from the overhead compartments hit him in the head, but he did not seek medical treatment. Nobody was reported injured in the incident. Deborah said he did not feel well when he went to bed at around 10:00pm EDT the previous night.

An autopsy is expected to be completed by Monday afternoon.

“Although Billy lived a public life, we don’t anticipate making any public statements over the next couple of days. Our family asks that you respect our privacy during these difficult times,” said Deborah Mays in a statement to the press.

Mays recently began co-starring in a television show on the Discovery Channel called Pitchmen. Mays, along with English advertiser Anthony Sullivan starred in the show where they would ‘pitch’ several products. By the end of the show, two inventors would be selected and be given a chance at selling their product “en masse”.

Mays also pitched sales for several other products including furniture polish Orange Glo, Mighty Putty, the Gopher, Zorbeez, and the cleaning product Kaboom!.

Saudi Arabia blocks access to Blogger, Flickr, LiveJournal

Monday, October 10, 2005

The government of Saudi Arabia blocked access to Google‘s Web blogging service Blogger, Yahoo!‘s photo sharing website Flickr, and the diary service LiveJournal as well as some other websites through their nationally run Internet Services Unit (ISU) last Tuesday. As a result, English-speaking Saudis were prevented from publishing blogs, reading journals, or viewing pictures on Flickr.

The Saudi Arabian government uses a filtering service provided by the United States-owned company Secure Computing. Similar blocking services have been implemented in other countries, such as The People’s Republic of China.

In the past, the ISU had, on and off, blocked access to BlogSpot.com’s free hosting service. However, according to activist organization Reporters Without Borders, “blog services [applications] had not until now been affected by the ISU’s filters. The complete blocking of blogger.com, which is one of the biggest blog tools on the market, is extremely worrying. Only China had so far used such an extreme measure to censor the Internet.”

On Thursday, access to Blogger.com was restored, but Flickr and LiveJournal remained inaccessible. The ISU did not release any public statement about the blocking or restoration of service to any specific website.

Balancing Work And Life Through Effective Time Management

Submitted by: Vasantha C

We see many people regretting that they worked hard all their lives but had never been able to pay enough attention to the other side of their lives and feel guilty, sad and unfulfilled. Why?

It is because they did not manage their time effectively to pay attention to other areas of their lives and focused only on their profession or business. Effective time management is essential to strike a balance between work and life. You will have enough time for doing all the things that you need to enjoy fulfillment in every aspect of your life.

What is Effective Time Management?

You can divide your time through proper planning and allocation for each area of your life. This will enhance your quality of life and leave no room for complaint or regrets later on. This process of managing your time in the best way to achieve a well rounded life is known as Effective Time Management.

I. Do not Mix Work and Personal Life

It is dangerous to mix work with the personal life as it can create problems in both areas. You should be able to divide and prioritize your time to keep your sanity and enjoy a satisfied life. Nurturing relationships is equally important to enjoy the quality of life and avoid regrets in future. You can also avoid complaints from your family and friends while equally contributing to your career or business.

II. Spend weekends for private life

Many of them bring their office work to home or work on the weekends and spoil their family life. If you realize this, you are one step closer to achieving work and life balance. The best way is to spend the weekends only for your interests other than work. Weekends are meant for the family, to spend quality time with your children, for playing indoor games or golf, tennis, or going for a long trek.

III. Do not over Work

What will happen, when you over work, the answer is you will get tired and you will need rest. There will also be no energy left for doing anything else even if you want to. If you spend most of your hours working even the little time that you could spend at home will be lost. So if you want to maintain a good work life balance you should never over work.

IV. Maintain a Diary or Organizer

Maintaining some kind of a record for listing your goals and priorities is essential to complete your activities in an organized manner without fail. So you can maintain a diary to note down the things you want to do and the time frame to do it. Technology is so advanced that you can carry your electronic organizer with you anywhere so that you never miss out on any of your commitments.

V. Effective Time Management

Effective time management is nothing but setting up goals and the time frame for achieving each goal and stick to the plan. Once you set up the goals and time lines and following them up strictly and draw boundaries accordingly you will be easily able to balance both work and life.

Family and Personal Goals Fulfilling your family s aspirations and your goals (such as a vacation tour, higher education in a prestigious institution and so on)

Business and Career Goals (Fixing the limitation on the Turnover or Aiming for the position that you dreaming for)

Personal Development Goals (Increasing your wealth and social status)

By following these simple steps you will soon begin to realize that balancing work and family life is indeed possible through effective time management.

Nursing Uniforms Have Evolved With The Times}

Submitted by: Mark Simpson

Any uniform worn for a particular kind of service adds a certain amount of dignity and discipline to every profession. The medical profession also falls under the same category and the medical uniforms and scrubs are no exception. The nursing uniforms have also undergone a major change and now, no longer are the drab white uniforms associated with nursing. Bright, colorful designs in soothing colors and styles have made their entry in the form of uniforms. A medical staff can choose their work wear according to their job assignments. Cartoon characters have also become a popular choice for the staff who is assigned duties in the pediatric division. It makes it easy for the children to associate with the medical staff if the uniforms they wear are less formidable and appear friendlier.

The main points to be considered while selecting suitable nursing uniforms are that the material should be comfortable, sweat absorbent, if possible odor resistant and wrinkle free. The above mentioned qualities enable the uniform to provide greater comfort to the wearer, thereby enabling him or her to go through a tough day at the hospital with ease. The latest designs and styles available in nursing uniforms have also managed to upgrade the look and feel of the uniforms in terms of fashion. Soothing colors like apple green or light pink are also very much a part of this new range of uniforms. Medical staff can now choose designs and styles in a variety of colors and sizes. The uniforms are available in all sizes ranging from small to plus size, so the correct fit is never an issue.

Many manufacturers have their virtual store that sells a variety of nursing uniforms. All a customer needs is an internet connection for their computers. Many medical professionals are opting for these virtual stores rather than visiting crowded stores and spending long hours in physically selecting and trying out just the right uniform style. The virtual stores let you surf their sites and get an actual preview of the various stocks that they are selling. However, it is advisable to compare the market rates from other stores before deciding to purchase your uniform. In addition, it is a good idea to find out about the total cost involved in getting the product delivered to your doorstep, as this may at times involve hidden charges and costs.

Many reputed and reliable stores offer attractive group discounts and various other kinds of offers. It may be beneficial therefore, to order in bulk. Get together with other staff members in your workplace, who might also be looking for nursing uniforms and place an order for the whole group. Our clothes have a definite impact on our personality and self-confidence. Better looking and well-suited uniforms also give us an enhanced sense of discipline and pride in our work. Hence, any uniform, from wherever we may purchase it, should always be chosen with the utmost care, only to reflect the very best about our profession and us.
