Members of US Senate offer tribute to Vice President Joe Biden
Saturday, December 10, 2016
Members of the U.S. Senate offered words of tribute to U.S. Vice President Joe Biden on Wednesday on the floor of the Senate.
Senator Barbara Mikulski spoke for several minutes, calling Biden a ‘champion of the people’ and a ‘great leader’. Mikulski also praised Biden’s wife, calling her a leader ‘in her own right.’ Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky called Biden a ‘real friend and trusted partner.’ Although scheduled to run for one hour, the tribute extended beyond two hours.
Two senators mentioned Biden’s work on the Violence Against Women Act, and commented on the positive impact made by that legislation. In January of this year, President Obama asked Biden to lead an effort to target cancer diagnosis and treatment. At least two Senators praised Biden’s efforts on that program, named the ‘Cancer Moonshot’ program.
Earlier in the week, Biden presided over a vote on the $1.8 billion bill, intended to fund the ‘Cancer Moonshot’ effort. Biden’s son Beau died of a brain tumor in 2015. Later that evening, Biden told a reporter, “I’m going to run in 2020.” When asked later to clarify what he meant, Biden stated, “For President […] What the hell, man.”
US stocks see 9% drop before making recovery
Friday, May 7, 2010
US stock markets saw an unusually turbulent day yesterday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) losing almost a thousand points in thirty minutes, although later recovered somewhat to end the day with a smaller loss.
The DJIA had its worst fall since 1987, a drop of 9% or 998.50 points, before going back up a bit to close with a loss of 3.30% or 347.80 points to a level of 10,520. The Nasdaq fell 82.65 points or 3.44%, and the Standard & Poor’s 500 index dropped 3.24% or 37.75 points.
According to some reports, the quick loss happened because a trader mistyped an order to sell a large amount of stock, causing the stock price to go down enough to trigger orders to sell elsewhere in the market. (By the following day this theory had been abandoned.) Other reports suggested that the biggest markets “slowed” their executions when it became clear that computerized errors were occurring; as a result, the vast majority of buy orders were briefly withdrawn, allowing the free-fall to continue for several minutes.
| We don’t know what caused it. We know that that was an electronic trade […] and we’re looking into it | ||
Stock for the Procter & Gamble company fell almost 37% during the sell-off, about 75 minutes to the closing bell. An investigation started into whether any erroneous trades happened.
Procter & Gamble spokeswoman Jennifer Chelune spoke about the incident: “We don’t know what caused it. We know that that was an electronic trade […] and we’re looking into it with Nasdaq and the other major electronic exchanges.”
The Reuters news agency reports that, at their height, the losses cause equity values to lose $1 trillion.
Some stocks saw extreme, but short, changes; for instance, consulting firm Accenture saw its shares plummet from about $42 to four cents, although it later rebounded to close the day at $41.09.
Meanwhile, oil prices also dropped to lows not reached since February. Benchmark crude was down $2.86 to $77.11 in New York.
“The potential for giant high-speed computers to generate false trades and create market chaos reared its head again today,” said Delaware senator Edward Kaufman. “The battle of the algorithms — not understood by nor even remotely transparent to the Securities and Exchange Commission — simply must be carefully reviewed and placed within a meaningful regulatory framework soon.” Kaufman, along with senator Mark Warner from Virginia, called on Congress to investigate the cause of the mass sell-offs.
Nasdaq, meanwhile, says that all trades of stocks at prices 60% higher or lower than the preceding price at or around 2.40 PM “or immediately prior” are to be cancelled; it noted that it coordinated its move with the other exchanges.
Chief investment officer at Fort Pitt Capital Group Charlie Smith said: “I think the machines just took over. There’s not a lot of human interaction. We’ve known that automated trading can run away from you, and I think that’s what we saw happen today.”
In the past three days, the DJIA has lost 631 points, or 5.7%, mainly over concerns about Greece’s ailing, debt-burdened economy. Peter Boockvar an equity strategist for Miller Tabak, commented: “The market is now realizing that Greece is going to go through a depression over the next couple of years. Europe is a major trading partner of ours, and this threatens the entire global growth story.”
Bringing Up Puppy How To Raise A Havanese
By Fiona A Kelly
Havanese puppies are sweet and lovable. However they do require a lot of time and training, so potential owners should make sure they are able to provide for a pup before taking the plunge. In the end, the time and effort it takes to raise a Havanese puppy is worth it. Completely caring for a Havanese puppy requires a flexible schedule, something that many busy families dont have. The aspects of Havanese puppy care, which include grooming, training, and exercising, might seem overwhelming at first. However, the end result makes up for all work involved. Though Havanese puppies make great family pets, it is important to consider whether or not a Havanese pup is conducive with a busy family lifestyle. These puppies require time and devotion from a loving family, and they have the potential to enrich the lives of the family members as well.
Havanese puppies make a great addition to any family. Perhaps one of the most popular aspects of these toy dogs is their size. They have acquired a large fan base among families with young children. Also, Havanese pups get along extremely well with other animals, making them a great choice for families who already have dogs or cats.
Havanese puppies are sweet and lovable dogs. Though they are intelligent and eager to satisfy, the care of Havanese puppies can be somewhat difficult. There are many elements of raising a Havanese puppy, and they all require time and patience on behalf of the owner. Before adopting a Havanese puppy, make sure that you are willing to devote the time needed to take care of it. If you have the means to provide and care for a Havanese puppy, and you are willing to put time into training, your reward will be a constant companion who you can truly call your best friend.
Despite their loving and sweet personalities, many people shy away from adopting Havanese puppies. This is because Havanese puppies tend to require a lot of training. Compared to many other dogs, they are somewhat difficult to housebreak. Because these small dogs have relatively small bladders, potty training them is one of the first trials a new Havanese puppy owner will face. Yet, with patience, this is a simple milestone to overcome. Another problem that Havanese puppy owners run into is grooming. Because Havanese pups do not shed, part of Havanese puppy care includes an occasional haircut.
Finally, exercise is another aspect of raising a Havanese pup that some might consider an inconvenience. The energetic and playful personalities of these dogs require a daily walk, unless they have a fenced in backyard to play around in all day. With the proper care and training, a Havanese puppy will grow up to be obedient and affectionate.
For families looking to adopt a Havanese puppy, their first step should be to consider what would be required of them as pet owners. Havanese pups can be high-maintenance, and their care is no easy task. Raising Havanese puppies requires both time and effort on the owners partand many busy moms and dads dont have the time to give. Additionally, it is important to make sure that you can provide for your petso there is a monetary commitment as well.
After assessing the commitment you will need to make in order to own a Havanese puppy, potential owners should next look at their own life styles. Is it possible to incorporate a new puppy into your life? For many blossoming families, the answer is no. Those who determine that they can love and raise a Havanese puppy are in for a rewarding experience. These sweet, affectionate pets will love you right back!

Sunday, January 30, 2005
AUSTRALIA – Mamdouh Habib, a former Guantanmo Bay detainee, arrived back in Australia and was reunited with his family on Friday, after having been held in the US navy base for three years without charge.
In a statement through his Australian lawyer, Stephen Hopper, the Habib family thanked the Australian people during Mr Habib’s incarereation. The statement also offered thanks for the work of Mr Habib’s American lawyer saying, “Most of all we’d like to thank Joe Margulies for his excellent efforts … Joe’s the best lawyer in the world.”
Mr Margulies says Mr Habib needs medical treatment for chronic physical and mental conditions he suffers from his incarceration.
Mr Habib was detained by Coalition forces in Afgahnistan three weeks after the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York, on suspicion of having links to Osama bin Laden and the Al Qaeda terrorist group.
Patient in Buckinghamshire hospital was treated in toilet, inquiry hears
Saturday, October 9, 2010
A patient at Stoke Mandeville Hospital had to be treated in a toilet after wards became overcrowded, it emerged on Friday.
The revelation came as Sheryl Pope, a Buckinghamshire National Health Service strategy director, was questioned over plans to bring healthcare to the forefront of the community. A number of councillers challenged her plans, however, claiming that the opposite had been happening.
The Bucks Free Press reported that councillors asked Pope why community hospital beds are being closed and why more clinics are being centralised. The Overview & Scrutiny Committee for Public Health Services was told that an “under-used” gynaecology clinic located at Buckingham Community Hospital was moved to Stoke Mandeville, which one councillor said was already too congested.
| One person had to be treated in the toilet. I’m wondering how quickly you’re going to change it. | ||
“You’re bringing things into Stoke, but there’s such a lot of congestion there… One person had to be treated in the toilet. I’m wondering how quickly you’re going to change it,” High Wycombe councellor Wendy Mallen asked Mrs Pope, a joint director for strategy and system reform.
It emerged that overnight wards at Chalfont’s and Gerrards Cross Hospital have remained closed since a fire risk was identified in 2008. Chalfont St Peter councillor, Bruce Allen, said of the revelation: “We’ve never had an answer from anyone of any intelligence to say what’s going to happen. We had a community hospital with 29 beds and it served us well. We keep asking when it’s going to be opened and we get nil answers. I’ve been to so many meetings and heard this nonsense. We can’t get an answer from anyone.”
Mrs Pope replied by saying that she could not give a “definitive answer,” but said that she considered Chalfont’s to be “an important part of the jigsaw.” Mrs Pope was told by the chairman of the Buckinghamshire County Council committee that she had “a duty” to inform residents of the futue of the hospital. “Unfortunately there’s always a reason for delaying it,” said Mike Appleyard. “All I’m saying is sorry, no longer. We expect you to be here within six months with some answers on the community hospitals.”
Hedley Cadd, another councillor, attacked the gynaecology transfer, saying that he and his wife were forced to travel for four hours to get to and from Stoke Mandeville Hospital, for a consultation that lasted only twenty minutes. Mrs Pope responded by saying that she was “very aware” of the issue, conceding that because the clinic is only 40% full, “those clinics are being denied to somebody else.” Mrs Pope said that it was too early to say how the Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust, a new organisation which is the result of a merger between the Buckinghamshire Hospitals NHS Trust and several community hospitals, would manage local hospitals.
Anne Eden, Chief Executive of the new organisation, said: “We felt it was important to change our name to reflect the wide range of services we now offer patients from our hospitals and in community settings and in people’s own homes. In addition, discussions took place with staff across the organisation alongside patient representatives to evolve our five patient promises to reflect our extended range of services which underpin everything that we do.”
Considering A New Design For A Garage Door In Newton Ma
byAlma Abell
It is obvious that the current garage door is not long for this world. The door sags on the hinges, and getting it to open or close takes considerably more effort than in times past. Rather than spending money trying to make repairs to a door that has seen better days, why not invest in a brand new Garage Door in Newton MA? Here are some tips that will help. Look at Different Designs There is no rule that says the new Garage Door in Newton MA has to be a copy of the old one. In fact, a change in design can be a very good thing.
The right choice can help dress up the look of the garage, and also provide some benefits that the older door design simply cannot provide. For example, perhaps the old design included two doors that swung outward on hinges. While the design is simple and certain cost effective, it never hurts to consider the installation of an overhead garage door. This design offers the benefit of not taking up much space when the door is open, and it is certainly easier to close from the inside. That means there is no need to go back out of the garage in order to close the doors on a dark night or during a rainstorm. To make it even better, many overhead doors can be mounted with small motors that mechanize the process of opening and closing the door. With the use of a remote control, it is possible to pull in the driveway, use the remote to open the door, and then drive into the garage. Once the vehicle is safely in the garage, the remote can be used to close the door. This feature does more than just offer convenience.
It also helps to provide a measure of security for the homeowner, since there is no need to get out of the car until it is clear that there is no nearby danger. To get a feel for the type of doors on the market today, Visit the Website and check out the different designs. The details provided will make it much easier to determine what is needed to install a specific type of door, and what types of features come with each design. With a little effort, it will be easy to find a door that is reasonably priced and will last for years.
Rachel Weisz wants Botox ban for actors
Tuesday, July 7, 2009
English actress Rachel Weisz thinks that Botox injections should be banned for all actors.
The 39-year-old actress, best known for her roles in the Mummy movie franchise and for her Academy Award-winning portrayal in The Constant Gardener, feels facial Botox injections leave actors less able to convey emotion and that it harms the acting industry as much as steroids harm athletes.
In an interview with UK’s Harper’s Bazaar, coming out next month, Weisz says, “It should be banned for actors, as steroids are for sportsmen,” she claims. “Acting is all about expression; why would you want to iron out a frown?”

Currently living in New York, she also mentions that English women are much less worried about their physical appearance than in the United States. “I love the way girls in London dress,” she claimed. “It’s so different to the American ‘blow-dry and immaculate grooming’ thing.”
