Health Club Statistics

By Todd Sinett

Health Club Reality

Did you know the fitness industry structures their entire business banking on the fact that you will not exercise? Actuarial studies have found that the average gym user will go less than twice a week. With the average monthly cost of health club memberships reaching $55, on average more than $39 worth of the membership goes to waste, each month! In a study of over 25,000 people in England by BMRB’s target group found that 67% of people who have gym memberships don’t use it at all!

In a study performed by Stefano Dellavigna an assistant professor of economics at the University of California at Berkely and and Ulrike Malmendier , an assistant professor of finance at Stanford they attempted to find out the reason why people buy health club memberships but don’t use them. They surmised that is because of consumer overconfidence. First people overestimate the number of times that they will go to the gym and then secondly they congratulate themselves by buying an expensive gym membership that rewards the frequent visitors with financial savings. This consumer overconfidence results in millions of dollars of profits for the health-clubs all the while reducing household income by hundreds of dollars a year.

This issue is so widespread that an article was published in the New York Times titled ‘How Much Does it Cost Not to go to the Gym?’ In the article the author surmised that the fictional British Bridget Jones said it best: ‘Gym visits 0, number of gym visits so far this year 1, cost of gym membership per year 370 pounds.’

These health clubs profit when you don’t utilize your membership, in fact they need you to not show up because they have oversold the space in the gym. If everyone who had a gym membership showed up the gyms would create a mass chaos. There have been hundreds of articles written on the subject of gym membership contracts. Some gyms have even been investigated for their enforcement of their contracts. Essentially it is ‘buyer beware’ and make sure that you read the fine print. Joining a gym is a legal contract that needs to be taken seriously. The only way to tip the scale in your favor is to use the membership that you have purchased.

Essentially they are going to get your money, yet if you don’t use the gym, they win!

Health-club Statistics

* Two thirds of all personal training sessions are being conducted at the gym.

* It is projected by American Sports Data that by 2030 the number of older Americans is expected to double from 35 million to 70 million.

* Older Americans represent the largest growth opportunity for health-clubs. Over the past 15 years, the defining characteristic of industry change has been the growth in the population of older health club members. In 2004, there were 10.2 million members over the age of 55, an increase of 562% over 1987.

* The busiest month for new members happens to be January. *Women continue to represent the slight majority of overall health club membership, accounting for 52 percent 2004.

Heating bills, oil price rise predicted

Wednesday, October 12, 2005

USA — A US government report was issued Wednesday predicting the rise of heating bills due to colder temperatures and impacts Hurricanes Rita and Katrina had on the nation’s energy production.

Local forecasters predict that most of the US will have a warmer-than-expected winter this year. However, households that heat their homes by gas can expect to pay 29.8% more in heating bills. In the case of colder-than-expected weather, an increase of 66% in household heating costs is likely. In typical weather, prices will rise about 47.6%. Households that use electricity can expect a rise of about 5% from last year. NOAA‘s 2005-2006 U.S. Winter Outlook calls for warmer-than-normal temperatures across much of the central and western United States, including Alaska and Hawaii. The Midwest, the Southern Californian coast and the East Coast have equal chances of warmer, cooler or near-normal temperatures this winter.

Around one third of the US crude oil and one fifth of the natural gas outputs in Mexico still remain closed due to hurricane-related damage. Seven oil refineries remain offline.

The Energy Information Administration predicts that the price of oil will rise to around $64 per barrel (42 gallons or 158.97 litres) in 2006, with $58 being the average for this year.

Polish mine explosion kills 8

Wednesday, November 22, 2006

Methane gas was blamed for the explosion deaths of 8 miners in southern Polish‘s Halemba coal mine Tuesday, November 21. Officials say at least 15 are missing.

Rescue efforts were halted because dangerously high levels of methane gas returned, according to Zbigniew Madej, spokesman for state-owned Coal Co., which operates the mine.

The missing miners’ locater devices were not emitting signals, increasing rescurers’ concerns for their well-being. Grzegorz Pawlaszek, head of Coal Co., said the 15 missing miners’ fate is “not known,” but added that “there is a chance to find someone still alive.”

“This is a tragedy. People have died here,” Polish Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski said when he came to Ruda Slaska to see the blast.

Earlier Wednesday, a reconnaissance rescue team descended 3000 feet toward the blast scene, only to retreat because of safety concerns related to high methane gas levels. Rescue digging efforts were also halted because of explosion concerns.

The missing men were aged 21-59. One of the miner’s family members, Andrzej Pytlik, 30, remained on scene with his sister, hoping and waiting for news of her husband, Krystian Gaszka.

Pytlik, also a miner, said through teary eyes that, “I work in the mines and I know that hope is scant because that’s the truth.”

The explosion occurred in a closed portion of the mine where the now-missing miners were working to retrieve abandoned equipment. According to Pawlaszek, the value of the equipment was $23 million, adding that “It was new equipment and that is why we decided to retrieve it.”

He indicated that the recovery work was performed under the supervision of gas detection specialists, and that the bodies of the recovered miners were difficult to identify because of the severity of burns and because their ID tags were blown away in the explosion.

The Halemba mine, located in Ruda Slaska, has produced coal for nearly 50 years, has been fraught with safety concerns and has a track record of serious accidents. One of the oldest mines in Poland, it is centrally located in the industrial Silesia region.

Earlier this year, a miner was trapped underground in the Halemba mine five days after a cave-in. In 1990, 19 miners were killed and 20 hurt in a gas explosion, and five were killed in collapse in 1991.

Inside, priests and mining officials were comforting and counseling with distraught relatives. Outside, eight white candles flickered on a main gate wall.

Phobia Therapy: The Answer To Curing Your Fears?

Submitted by: David Samson

Everybody has one fear or another but phobias can be overpowering. Some people find themselves incapable of performing everyday activities because of their fears. When a phobia begins affecting the quality of life, the time is right to start looking for professional assistance.

What is a Phobia?

A phobia is an irrational fear of common situations or objects. People that suffer from a phobia believe that they will be harmed or injured severely. Phobias are characterized as social, specific or agoraphobia the fear of being trapped in a particular situation or a place.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, 10 percent of US adults suffer from some type of phobia. The most common phobias involve spiders, snakes, heights, injections, dogs, flying and social interactions. When exposed to the specific object, being or situation, people that suffer from a phobia exhibit similar symptoms. Fear and panic are the most common ones. People that suffer from a phobia will feel dizziness, anxiety, nausea, breathlessness and fear of dying whenever they are experiencing the circumstances that trigger the phobia.

How will a Therapist Address the Issue?

Therapy is the best way to address the issue and to increase a person s quality of life. If you are suffering from any phobia, you should certainly consider therapy.

In the beginning, the therapist will try to figure out the root of the problem. Some people with a fear of flying, for example, may actually be afraid of staying in a closed space for a long period of time or a sense of helplessness due to lack of control over the situation. A phobia may appear to be linked to something specific but its origin may be a completely different issue.

Can Hypnotherapy really help?

A skilled hypnotherapist can find the reason for the phobia and offer a long-term, reliable solution. Through hypnosis, the therapist will find the underlying, sub-conscious cause of the problem, the one that even a patient may actually be unaware of.

Once the cause is discovered, the therapist will use the sessions to eliminate an individual s conditioned response to that trigger. Very often, a traumatic event from the past is the root of the phobia. Many people that suffer from a phobia block the memory of this event. A therapist will be capable of getting to that cause only through hypnosis.

How many Sessions will I need?

In the first sessions, the therapist will help a patient relax and focus. This state is known as hypnotic trance and it is needed to gain access to sub-conscious memories.

Very often, the conscious mind stays in the way of finding a solution. Hypnotherapy quiets the consciousness, allowing a person to focus on the intrinsic, sub-conscious cause of a problem. Once the origin of the phobia is discovered, the hypnotherapist will suggest behavioural changes that will help for conquering the fear.

The typical duration of the therapy is three to four sessions but some people may require a longer period of time. If you suffer from a phobia, hypnotherapy is one of the best options for your needs. Phobias can be mildly uncomfortable or they may lead to major lifestyle changes. Whatever the problem and its cause are, talk to a hypnotherapist. You will be incapable of finding a magic cure but this treatment will deliver excellent results over time.

Iranian International Master Dorsa Derakhshani discusses her chess career with Wikinews

Tuesday, April 14, 2020

In February 2017, the Iranian Chess Federation announced two teenage chess players, Dorsa Derakhshani and her younger brother Borna Derakhshani, were banned from representing the national team. The federation announced their decision although Dorsa Derakhshani had previously decided and informed the chess federation she did not wish to play for Iran.

Dorsa Derakhshani is currently 21 years old and holds the International Master (IM) as well as Woman Grand Master (WGM) titles. Her brother, Borna, plays for the English Federation and holds the FIDE Master title.

Dorsa Derakhshani was banned since she did not wear a hijab, an Islamic headscarf, while competing at the Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival in January 2017. Under the laws of Islamic Republic of Iran, hijab is a mandatory dress code. Her brother Borna Deraskhsani was banned for playing against Israeli Grand Master (GM) Alexander Huzman at the same tournament. Iran does not recognise the existence of Israel, and previously, Irani athletes have avoided playing against Israeli athletes.

Mehrdad Pahlavanzadeh, the president of the country’s chess federation, explained the decision to ban the players saying, “As a first step, these two will be denied entry to all tournaments taking place in Iran and in the name of Iran, they will no longer be allowed the opportunity to be present on the national team.” ((fa))Farsi language: ?????? ????? ?? ??? ??? ?? ??? ????? ?? ?? ???? ???????? ?? ?? ????? ? ?? ??? ????? ?????? ??????? ????? ??????? ? ???? ???? ???? ?? ??? ??? ?? ??????? ????. He further stated, “Unfortunately, something that should not have happened has happened and our national interest is paramount and we have reported this position to the Ministry of Sports.” ((fa))Farsi language: ????????? ?????? ?? ????? ????????? ?????? ??? ? ????? ??? ?? ?? ?? ???? ?????? ???? ? ?? ??? ???? ?? ?? ????? ???? ?? ????? ?????.

IM Dorsa Derakhshani, who currently studies at Saint Louis University in the United States and plays for the United States Chess Federation, discussed her chess career, time in Iran and the 2017 controversy, and her life in Saint Louis with a Wikinews correspondent.

Gastric bypass surgery performed by remote control

Sunday, August 21, 2005

A robotic system at Stanford Medical Center was used to perform a laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery successfully with a theoretically similar rate of complications to that seen in standard operations. However, as there were only 10 people in the experimental group (and another 10 in the control group), this is not a statistically significant sample.

If this surgical procedure is as successful in large-scale studies, it may lead the way for the use of robotic surgery in even more delicate procedures, such as heart surgery. Note that this is not a fully automated system, as a human doctor controls the operation via remote control. Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is a treatment for obesity.

There were concerns that doctors, in the future, might only be trained in the remote control procedure. Ronald G. Latimer, M.D., of Santa Barbara, CA, warned “The fact that surgeons may have to open the patient or might actually need to revert to standard laparoscopic techniques demands that this basic training be a requirement before a robot is purchased. Robots do malfunction, so a backup system is imperative. We should not be seduced to buy this instrument to train surgeons if they are not able to do the primary operations themselves.”

There are precedents for just such a problem occurring. A previous “new technology”, the electrocardiogram (ECG), has lead to a lack of basic education on the older technology, the stethoscope. As a result, many heart conditions now go undiagnosed, especially in children and others who rarely undergo an ECG procedure.

Ricky Hatton regains IBF light welterweight title

Sunday, January 21, 2007

Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton regained the IBF light welterweight title belt he relinquished less than 12 months ago when he defeated Juan Urango in Las Vegas, Nevada tonight.

“The Hitman” won by unanimous decision, as the fight went to 12 rounds. Despite early match odds suggesting Hatton would dominate the fight, this was not the case. Each round was close, but most pundits and judges alike agreed that Urango only won 1 of the 12 rounds, with Hatton taking the other 11.

Despite the unfamiliar confines of Las Vegas, Hatton looked touched by the ringing of football fan-like chants, familiar in British boxing, that rang around the arena, as more than half of it was filled by traveling support from across the atlantic.

Many in the UK will hope Hatton has ended the “curse” that has seen names such as Frank Bruno, Naseem Hamed, Barry McGuigan and others fall short while headlining fights on “The Strip”.

From here, it is widely believed “The Hitman” will move on to fight Jose Luis Castillo in June, again likely in Vegas.

Russian submarine rescued by Royal Navy

Sunday, August 7, 2005

A Russian submarine trapped during a training exercise in Berezov Bay, 75 km south of Petropavlovsk in Kamchatka, has been rescued after it was cut free by a Royal Navy Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). The crew of seven officers and midshipmen, who spent three days in temperatures around 6oC and were running out of oxygen supplies, were unharmed.

The submarine appeared on the surface at 4:15 p.m. local time. “The crew opened the hatch and climbed the rescue ship’s deck on their own,” said Admiral Victor Fyedorov. The first aid to the crew was given on ship Alagez, and they were transferred to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatka hospital.

The British Scorpio ROV cut fishing nets and debris, freeing the trapped submarine. “The rescue operation was completed successfully. We thank everyone, and especially the British rescue crew,” said Fyedorov.

The submarine will be repaired and modernized. “After salvaging it, AS-28 will be carried on one of the rescue ship’s decks to the coast, where specialists will examine it,” said a spokesperson of VMS (“Company for secondary metal and boats”). Russian President Vladimir Putin has pledged an inquiry into the incident.

The United States and Japan also sent equipment to help in the rescue. However, it was not used.
